Gov. Beshear's Statement on Jefferson Davis Statue

By Gov. Steve Beshear

Frankfort, KY - "The Historic Properties Advisory Commission by law has control over the statues in the Rotunda of the State Capitol, and recently I asked the Commission to review the appropriateness of the Jefferson Davis statue remaining in the Rotunda.

The Commission received thousands of public comments and consulted with state historians. After reviewing all the information, the consensus it reached is that the Jefferson Davis statue represented a part of the state's history and will remain in the Capitol. However, the panel voted to establish a committee that would determine ways to ensure the statues, including Jefferson Davis, are displayed in the appropriate historical context.

While many Kentuckians feel that it would be preferable for the Jefferson Davis statue to be in a museum setting, the addition of this educational and historical context is critical. The generations to come must understand the enormous toll of the Civil War that tore apart this nation and the tragic issue of slavery at the root of that war.

Kentucky played a unique historical role as the birthplace of the presidents of both sides of the conflict. We must ensure that dark chapter of our nation's past serves to educate in ways that ensure such a tragedy can never happen again."

Ms. Geisselhardt will be missed

by Shamarie Claiborne

Adair County Schools lost one of their own last Friday, July 31, 2015. Ms. Pam Geisselhardt was taken away from us tragically. Everyone has a great Geisselhardt story. Today, during the Adair County Schools "Opening Day" there was a table set up in her memory and folks were asked to write their favorite story or memory of her. These will be given to the family. Everyone stopped and wrote their memories.

My story concerns my youngest son who she noticed had signs of Dyslexia. After being tested sure enough he did. With her keen eye and experience she identified something that could have truly hindered him. Instead we found out in first grade. And after three years with Ms. Geisselhardt had provided him with skills to compensate. He is now a great student and identified as Gifted and Talented in Math. That is one example of a million moments in her long career that changed a students and their families life.

Superintendent Reed, in his notification to us all stated "I had the privilege of working with Pam for a number of years. We all know that Pam was an innovative classroom teacher with a passion for young learners. She was also a champion for educators, heading the local teachers association for several years." And concluded with this heartfelt thought "Ms. Geisselhardt was a true scholar and will be missed by her many friends and colleagues in the educational community, within our district and across the state."

The Adair County Schools was lucky to have such a great lady working with it staff and students. Ms. Geisselhardt you will be missed.

Carol Perkins: Fashion like a lady of the 20s at the beach

A quandary: "The pros of staying behind outweighed the cons. . . According to the kids, they loved the beach but according to Guy, I would not" - CAROL PERKINS at the beach
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: The Annual Perkins Beach Party

By Carol Perkins

A beach trip is especially intimidating for a "larger" lady*. First of all, I don't wear a swimsuit as such. Thank goodness for Land's End swim tops and shorts. However, in wearing this outfit I feel like a lady of the 20's. "Who cares?" Guy says gently because he knows I care. "No one knows you." My kids know me and my grandchildren and I don't want to scare them. This is the primarily reason I don't like the beach, but I also, as stated, do not like the sun.

What might have been: If Mike had been named Newt Neal

Ralph Roy Waggener writes: Just think about this for a moment, if Mike Neal’s parents had chosen Newt for Mike's first name then the Company could have had a more suitable name! Yes, TNT Construction would have better represented this Dynamite Three, for their power to get things done! Just thinking Ralph Roy Waggener as always out of order!
