Campbellsville, KY Main Street - Ready for the 4th of July

2015-06-25 - Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo CM staff photo.
Bright Red, White, and Blue American Flags line Campbellsville's Main Street above what appears to be a solid line of hanging flowers. City works were out in force today, touching up traffic stripes on the well marked Avenue, and many private businesses, seemingly caught up in the spirit on this beautiful June day, were doing their part to make the community sparkle. The scene is looking west, toward Green County.

KY Afield Outdoors: Blue Water Trails - Slate Creek

This article is the thirty-first in the periodic Blue Water Trails series highlighting the floating, fishing and tourism opportunities on Kentucky's streams and rivers.

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - Bath County was once a center of iron production in Kentucky and produced a great percentage of the iron smelted west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the early years of Kentucky statehood. Jacob Meyers left Pennsylvania in 1782 to search for iron ore deposits in the wilderness of Kentucky. He eventually held nearly 10,000 acres along Slate and Mill Creeks and began construction of an iron furnace in 1791.

The Bourbon Furnace, also called the Old Slate Furnace, used local ores to produce kettles, plowshares, nails and cookware of such quality that the U.S. Navy contracted the furnace to produce cannonballs. Many made their way down river to New Orleans during the War of 1812. Andrew Jackson fired cannonballs produced by this furnace during his victory over the British at the Battle of New Orleans.

Bourbon Furnace still stands sentinel along the banks of Slate Creek and the public park around it serves as an excellent access point for floats on the stream. Slate Creek flows through the heart of scenic Bath County, where the Outer Bluegrass Region meets the Cumberland Plateau. Several floats on Slate Creek showcase this incredibly scenic and overlooked corner of Kentucky.

Gov. Beshear's statement on Supreme Court ACA ruling

FRANKFORT, KY. (June 25, 2015) - "Making healthcare coverage accessible and affordable to all citizens is the cornerstone of the Affordable Care Act. To conclude that the law's intent was only to offer subsidies to those who purchased healthcare coverage through their state's health benefit exchange when many states declined to establish one would have penalized the very individuals the law was designed to help. I am pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court wisely ruled in favor of those 6.4 million people in the nation who could have lost their access to affordable health.

"The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in King v. Burwell has no impact on Kentuckians who qualified for discounts through kynect, as their subsidies were never in question. However, it reaffirms that, from the very start, we did the right thing for the more than 500,000 Kentuckians who have qualified for healthcare coverage through kynect since January 1, 2014." - Governor Steve Beshear

Remembering Edgar Holmes: Writer sure does miss him, already

Edgar Holmes, 94, Adair County, KY (1921-2015)

By Morgan Long

Edgar loved to eat. I enjoyed fixing him many meals which at different times consisted of some of his favorites polk, hoecakes, white beans, salmon patties and cabbage.

In early spring the first thing he would ask "Is Polk about ready?" On the days I was cooking for him I would call to let him know and he was in the driveway before we could hang up the phone!

Edgar and I spent many hours reliving the past. He always said that James Long, who was my dad, was the best friend he ever had.

Carol Perkins: Watermelon and summer

By Carol Perkins

Watermelon and summer. It is hard to think of one without the other. When I was very young, watermelons took the place of cakes and pies, both of which we seldom had. We had watermelon in the summer and hot chocolate and toast in the winter. Those were desserts and good ones, too.

I never think of watermelons that I don't think of Beech Bend Park. Once or twice during the summer, the family (extended as well as immediate) spread out a picnic lunch under a big oak tree near the river. At the end of the meal, men flipped open their pocket knives and cut large and small pieces of watermelon that were usually placed on newspapers for a quick clean up. The little one would sink their faces into the watermelon, but the men would cut off hunks with their knives. Women usually used forks and tried not to get the juice all over their peddle-pushers (pants).

Jon Halsey: Billy Joe Fudge hit this one out of the park!

Comments re article 76062 Billy Joe Fudge Thanks Rob Wilkerson and Junior Stotts

Jon Halsey writes:
BJ hit this one outta the park!

I totally agree with his assessment of the silence of "the roaring crowd."

The reason(s) for lack of leadership or comment from elected officials on this issue is yet another mystery to be added to the plethora of mysteries surrounding local officials past and present.

To continue BJ's baseball anology, we seldom hear anything from the General Manager or team owner until the team wins the pennant, then lo and behold, there they are at the photo-op taking the credit and accolades.

Anyone else have June 25 for an anniversary?

Seven EIGHT Anniversaries as of 8:11amCT today, Monday, 25 Jun 2015, (thanks to Lee Ann Sullivan) listed in CM Birthdays

There are quite a few Birthdays, In Memory Birthdays, today, but not a record in the Birthdays column today, and a lot of very important people listed. But not, by any means, a record number for the feature.

But the anniversaries list today may be a record: Six were listed by just after midnight, but that number soared when we got the word that it is the 60th Anniversary of Odell & Shirley Corbin.

Do we have them all now, or were there more on this very popular Marrying Day? You can submit birthdays and anniversaries using any Contact/Submit button. If you need help, call 270-250-2730.

Billy Joe Fudge: Thanks, Rob Wilkerson and Junior Stotts

To Rob Wilkerson for his "sacrifice bunt" and to Junior Stotts for "going to bat" with powers that be to secure the turning lanes for intersection at Campbellsville Street/KY 55 & Fairground Street/KY 206.

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

In the spirit of full disclosure Junior Stotts is not only a good friend but is my cousin. That being said, I would like to say thank you to him for once again "going to bat" for our community by encouraging the powers that be to exercise common sense. Not constructing the much needed turning lanes at the Business HWY 55 and HWY 206 intersection during the ongoing construction project would have been a missed opportunity and another example of tax-payer money being misspent.
