AMY PIKE: Board of Elections obligated to inform public about decision

Writer asks: Why does the Board of Elections, with only two people voting, have control over how much of the taxpayers money will be spent in an appeal process without having to consult with the Fiscal Court?

By Amy Pike
Personal commentary

I feel like the Board of Elections should be obligated to inform the public as to why they made the decision to appeal Judge Vance's ruling.

From the amount of time that was spent by our Circuit Judge reviewing all of the facts, evidence, and voting logs, it is unbelievable that anyone would suggest that she received outside influences in her decision.

Letter: Also surprised by All Clear

Jon Halsey writes:
Mr. Curry was not the only one surprised by the "all clear" report.

I was following the audio/video live stream from svrweather.com as they traveled between Campbellsville and Greensburg. Shortly after they proclaimed that the storm had "petered out" and all we could expect was maybe some heavy rain, the winds kicked into high gear, the sky light up like "Thunder Over Louisville" and the trees started dancing the "Shimmy Shimmy Coco Bop".

I wasn't surprised since I was watching the radar image on split screen and couldn't understand what info they were tracking.

I would have loved to stayed tuned to see and hear their reaction but since I was on the third floor at the time, I felt the basement was probably a wiser option (you know, just to keep the wife happy).

Storm, 25 Apr 2015: Just after radio gave almost clear, winds hit

Heaviest damage appeared to be at the Charles Fletcher farm off Dale Morrison Road, Jimmy Curry's on KY 92, and at Coffey Farms on Old Montpelier Road and damage to trees, huge and small, in the area.

"It came over the radio last night around eight-thirty to a quarter to nine," Jimmy Curry remembers, "that the worst of storm had passed over Adair County.

"Then - it wasn't five minutes later - it sounded like the loudest train came through."

The sound was that of straight line winds, which left damage to nearly every building on his historic showplace farm on Montpelier Road - KY 92, damaging fencerows and knocking down trees. Fortunately it did only minor damage to the historic main house on the farm, originally built by Dr. Samuel A. Taylor and which once housed Dr. Taylor's thriving medical practice in a second story room.

Carol Perkins: The Cruise-Part III - Friendships are gifts

'Friendships are gifts. I have been blessed with many gifts and many journeys and as long as we can, we will continue our tradition. We don't care where we go just as long as we go together.' - CAROL PERKINS

The first few days were at sea. I love those leisurely days with nothing to do but sit in the shade (that's me), read a book, or sleep. The first day I could not find a chair. Four thousand people were sitting in them. Finally I found one stuck under an eave, so I claimed it and settled in for the afternoon.

Happy Tail: Regrets overwhelmed, but Eden made them go away

Peg Schaeffer wonders if she's an enabler for persistent dog welfare offenders - individuals who refuse to spay and neuter, vaccinate, license, and practice responsible pet ownership - when her big heart rules that the welfare of the dogs outweighs outrage at being used by those who just never get the message. There's regret over those who adopt, and betray the trust she put in them. But then, the bad feelings evaporate when hope, in the form of a caring vet, Dr. Olt, and a wonderful little girl, Eden Bradshaw, made the bitterness she had felt all go away. 'This life is a constant seesaw,' she says.

Often when people come to the farm and see the dogs running and playing in the yard they tell me "I wish I had enough land to do what you're doing". And I always tell them "No, you don't."

Several good things are beginning to happen in these parts as a result of Horse Cave's being selected as a cultural arts city with a genuine downtown cultural district.

One of the most promising is a reawakening of an interest in oral history.
