Gov. Beshear declares statewide emergency in response to winter storm FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 16, 2015) - In response to heavy snows and bitter cold across the Commonwealth in the past 12 hours, Gov. Steve Beshear declared a statewide emergency to allow local officials immediate access to state resources to assist in public safety and recovery efforts. "This storm system is still dumping snow across much of the state and temperatures are forecast to drop further. Some areas may see accumulation of up to 16 inches, making it one of the worst storms in recent memory," said Gov. Beshear. "By declaring a state of emergency now for the entire state, we can deploy any needed state assistance, including National Guard troops if necessary, without delay." Gov. Beshear and state officials remind drivers that it is extremely important to avoid travel if possible so road crews can salt and plow interstates and major highways. He again encouraged citizens to check on elderly neighbors. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2015-02-16 14:57:05 | Comments | Printable version
Peggy Fudge: Cabin fever ain't what it used to be Weather, as history, is what intrigues her. 'Historical reports of snow that didn't disappear until summer make us wonder every time the snow flies if that might happen again,' she writes. And puzzles over the time - was it February 1977 - when we were snowed in for a whole month. And joins our plea to Mike and his history cousin./brother, to enlighten us during the days of ennui we face. - CM By Peggy Fudge I really enjoy reading about the weather-when it's history. If it's what's happening today, I pretty much take the attitude of 'it is what it is-deal with it.' If you're talking years ago, I enjoy the stories (sometimes enhanced with age) of how bad it was and how everyone got through it. Travel Tip: Gas Tank levels affect traction By Jon Halsey A conversation over coffee this morning made me aware that "Sunny South" natives might not be aware of a bit of advice that those of us from the "Frozen North" take for granted. When deep snow abounds and travel is necessary, it is important to keep your gas tank at least half full, particularly for rear drive vehicles. Not only in cases of emergency but primarily because the extra weight over or near the rear wheels gives much needed added traction. - Jon Halsey, Knifley, KY 2015-02-16 14:14:33 | Comments | Printable version

MIKE WATSON: Snow-Go once again... Historic snow days from 11 February 2014 In this column, from just over 1 year ago, Mike Watson sets the record straight on real location, attributed to Columbia, of the record cold day in 1963. We in Kentucky have had plenty of snow and ice for one winter. Not a record, but cabin fever and the like seem to have overtaken so many residents that open rebellion is in the mind of many. Commute to Glasgow aborted at end of Adair County A Moment from Blizzard of 16 Feb 2015 By Celia Downey Essay accompanied by photo Back in COLUMBIA, KY (11:17amCT 16 Feb 2015) - Good morning Ed. At 0600 this am the parkway to Glasgow was in good shape for travel, even with the snow apocolypse coming down, making a near white out condition for travel. There were several snow trucks making the path; however, at the end of Adair County, the path/tracks slowly disappeared and the snow banks screeched on my car making it necessary to turn around and head for home. I stopped at Walmart and got some additional dog and horse bedding plus apple treats for the horses. The reward for the crunchy struggle home came from my three horses, with their welcoming trumpets and the beauty of the three, at attention in the blizzard. They refused their stalls and treats, preferring the snow and remained standing in the storm. I feel fortunate to have captured their moment of Welcome Home. Their barn is open should they decide to go in later. - Celia 2015-02-16 11:09:29 | Comments | Printable version

Letter: Familiar with Church Street, Burkesville, KY Paul Patton writes: It was easy for me to identify the street sign, "N. Main and Church St." For eight years I served as pastor of First Christian Church which is located at 101 N. Main St. in Burkesville and the parsonage where my wife and I spent week-ends was located on Church St. Of course the bank building on that corner made it recognizable also. Here is another trivia question. Since there are no church buildings on Church Street, why is it so named? Those of us familiar with the history of Burkesville know why; however, I will await others responses. - Paul PattonComments re photo 58896 Local Trivia How would you quickly know where 2015-02-16 10:39:22 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
