Judge Stephens orders flags to half staff, remembers Sen. Ford

County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Senator Wendell Ford, truly a friend to the people of Adair County, as well as people across the Commonwealth.
"We were saddened to hear of the passing of one of the greatest statesmen of our time, who served the people of this great Commonwealth in many public offices, most notably as Governor and United States Senator for many years.

"Senator Wendell Ford was a grassroots politician and public servant who related to and represented the working people.

"He had so many local friends and ties in Adair County. I personally have many fond memories of meeting and knowing Wendell Ford, like eating a country ham supper on Miller Avenue frequently with Cotton and Jenny Phelps, parents of Tommy and Kathy.

"Senator Wendell Ford, a man who had the spirit and heart for the working man, will, without doubt, be greatly missed."

Brittany Smith recognized for students top standing in KY !

2015-01-23 - Burkesville, KY - Photo by Priscilla Schwartz, Cumberland County Director, FRYSC.
Sue Stivers sends news of an Adair County residence who has earned distinction as a 7th grade science teacher at Cumberland County Middle School. Above, Superintendent Dr. Kirk Biggerstaff presented Brittany Wilkinson Smith with a certificate for having the First Place 7th Grade Science Scores on the 2013-14 KPREP in all of Kentucky! While studying Agriculture Education at the University of Kentucky, Brittany says she used to wonder whether she and fellow students were learning about agriculture or science, and has since found that the two disciplines have more in common than most people might think. Brittany and her husband, Kyle live in Cane Valley, KY. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Wilkinson of Adair County. Brittany is another of those bright Adair County stars shining so brightly beyond the borders of the county. We personally couldn't be prouder, especially since she received the honor in a place I will always remember as my own. Congratulations, Brittany! - Sue Stivers

By Charles Balcom

WILLIAMSBURG, KY - The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team cruised to a 40-6 Mid-South Conference dual victory over Cumberlands on Friday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

The Blue Raiders racked up five or more points in six of their eight victories en route to winning their second MSC dual of the year.

Lindsey Wilson used a fast start to build a 20-point lead over the Patriots after four weight classes.

Chad Lampe began the day with a 4-2 decision win over James Nolan at 125 pounds for the 3-0 lead. Felix Casa del Valle then recorded the first Blue Raider pin of the day after coming from behind to upset Grant Burkhalter, ranked No. 13 at 133 pounds, in four minutes and 35 seconds to extend the lead to 9-0.

After the Patriots forfeited at 141 pounds, Isaac Thomas posted a shutout as he defeated Terry Stockton with a 16-0 technical fall in six minutes and 15 seconds to make it 20-0.

At the 157-pound class, Joe Cozart, No. 1 at 157, was upset by Tristan Macri. No. 12 at 149, with a 2-1 decision loss. Macri used his length to keep Cozart at bay and handed the Blue Raider his first loss against NAIA competition since the 2012-13 season.

After Cumberlands forfeited the 165-pound match, Lindsey Wilson lost their second and final match of the night at 174 pounds.

Erick Gomez (No. 7 at 174) fell in a tight 3-2 decision to Sean Bateman, making the score 26-6 in favor of Lindsey Wilson.

Lindsey Wilson got back to the winning ways at 184 pounds as Michael Pixley dominated Eddie Bernal with a 17-2 technical fall victory in the first period, gaining the 15th and decisive point just seconds before the buzzer. Pixley remains undefeated at 7-0 on the season.

Jake Maupin kept the momentum going as he recorded the second Blue Raider pin of the night when he took down Devin Morrow at 197 pounds just over a minute into the match for six more points.

In the final match of the night, Ameer Daniels went toe-to-toe with Nicholas Auxier at 285 pounds. Both grapplers struggled to gain an advantage and after an escape by each in the second and third periods, the match went to overtime tied 1-1.

Once in overtime, Daniels was able to escape and keep Auxier from escaping and hold on for the TB-1 2-1 win, giving Lindsey Wilson the 40-6 match victory.

The Blue Raiders are now 2-0 in MSC duals while Cumberlands falls to 0-2 in the MSC.

Lindsey Wilson also defeated Cumberlands earlier this season at the NWCA National Duals by a 32-9 margin. - News from Lindsey Wilson College

It's no wonder the Legg's, Babins, the Bradley Hayes family, and the rest of the Cool Springs corner of Gradyville didn't have to shovel any of the "blizzard" today - Dale got it all for us with his agaped snow collecting technique!

He is a great neighbor, friend and family member for sure -always willing to lend a hand.

Thanks Dale!

- Guy Babin
Thanks, Guy Babin It's a wonderful community which recognizes its heroes. What an inspiring thought were a statue of Dale Hayes, a-gape as in the Frances Salyers masterpiece, were erected on top of Mt. Matney. We don't have enough statues of heroes in our county.

She's getting lots of advice on smoke free breakfasts, including the LCADD list at Smoke-free restaurants, from Jelaine Harlow, which writer says she will be checking out soon.

By Barbara Armitage

If you need something just ask CM! I've been getting calls, texts and emails from all over with suggestions for smoke free restaurants. I want to thank all these health conscience people for taking the time to help. Jelaine Harlow texted to tell me that if you go to the Lake Cumberland District Health Department web site http://www.lcdhd.org/ and just click on the no-smoking logo there is a list of all the no smoking restaurants in 10 counties, (or, if you like to go in one click: Smoke-free restaurants) There were several I didn't know about but I promise that I will be checking them out soon.

Thanks!
