Letter: Russell Co. Smith Family Military Service Spans 100 Years

Jeff V Smith writes:
PVT. William S. Smith in G Company was my great-grandfather. He is buried at Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery, near Pleasant Hill Boat Dock on Lake Cumberland. His son was my grandfather Jefferson S. Smith, whose son was my father A. G. Smith.

That brings me to another thought, William S. Smith's great-grandson, my oldest brother, served in Vietnam. Avery G. Smith, of Russell Springs, was killed in Vietnam a little over 100 years later in June of 1966. For Avery's actions during that battle he received the Distinguished Service Cross. LOUISVILLE - One of the best business decisions that Greg Reece ever made was switching suppliers in his Kentucky Proud kettle corn business.

Reece, owner of Mr. G's Kettle Corn in Louisville, can tell the difference after making the switch last year to Kentucky-grown kernels supplied by Preferred Popcorn, another Kentucky Proud business.

"The other corn wasn't popping the same because I was getting different corn every time," said Reece. "My supplier at the time couldn't tell me where my corn was coming from."

CJE obtains $50,000 CAUD help for Green River Animal Shelter

The effort to save Green River Animal Shelter buoyed by cost-shift project, aided by Columbia/Adair County Utilities work.

By Ed Waggener

Adair County CJE Mike Stephens' announcement of help from the Columbia/Adair County Utilities District for sewer improvements at Green River Animal Shelter, made at the January 2015 regular session of Fiscal Court, were realized at the Thu 15 January 2015 meeting of the CAUD water board meeting. The CAUD board - Robert Flowers, David Jones, Tim Baker, Larry Russell Bryant and Barry Stotts voted 5-0 to authorize a $50,000 expenditure to install a hair grinding pump to enable hookup to the CAUD sewer system. With the sewer hookup, the shelter would no longer be dependent on a rather costly septic tank service. CAUD General Manager Lenny Stone said that engineering work will be done through Ronnie Grant and his company, Bell Engineering, of Columbia, KY.

Crocus-the-flower-watch time has arrived

Billy Joe Fudge's article on the gentle falls of the West Fork of Crocus-the- Creek was a subtle reminder of neglect of the Crocus-the-Flower watches on Columbiamagazine.com.

Two years ago, we received a picture of Crocus above ground from Mr. Mike Watson, from his other home in Harrodsburg, KY, showing budding-not-yet-blooming crocus he and wife Renae, were enjoying on January 7, 2013.

The earliest Crocus a-blooming we found using a Google search of CM were way up in February, though there are vague mental memories or imaginings of January blooms.

Hope any who might spot Crocus in early bloom will let us know - perhaps by sharing a date stamped photo with us. - CM

KY Color: West Fork of Crocus Creek and its gentle falls

Billy Joe Fudge awards the stream superlatives, not only for it's great beauty, but for its deserved reputation, he says, for the length and girth of its West Fork Copperheads and its Rattlers.

Kentucky Division of Forestry

The upper reaches of the West Fork of Crocus Creek, in the hearts those who know it, is the most pristine and inspirational stream of water in The Great Wooded South.

West Fork heads up on the Eastern side of Highway 61 between Breeding and the top of Renox Hill. It's waters are indeed filtered through both the soil and sandstone of that area where Adair, Metcalfe and Cumberland Counties are conjoined.
