Revisit Knifley: Another Chelf story

Revisit Knifley is an all-day celebration which will be held in Knifley, Adair County, KY, on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Potential vendors may contact Gayla Baker at 270-789-0013. Anyone who has items related to "old" Knifley or information about the history of the community is asked to assist with the historical display. Persons may also contact Kathy Tucker at 270-634-1263 about the events.

Richard Hovious writes:
Ed. I remember that Mr. Lee Chelf, Mr. Van Dunbar and Mr. Babe Hovious(my grandfather)were great competitors in Knifley during the 30's. I had another "Chelf" experience during the 50's; I was rushing to my General Quarters station in the middle of the night aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt off the coast of Bulgaria (a very hostile area). I collided with a chief petty officer that looked VERY familiar. After a few moments of somewhat hostile staring we recognized each other---he was Ralph CHELF of Roley. We were a little late arriving at our GQ stations! --Richard Hovious

Yvonne Marshall: Remembering good times in 1940s

Yvonne Marshall writes:
It was so good running into the Waggener family yesterday at the Circle R. Had such a good visit remembering the good times. Loved hearing stories of Charles (Marshall) and Arthur Lee (Waggener) and how Mrs. Waggener cooked for them. Charles always loved going to their house. Mrs. Waggener was one of the loveliest and kindest persons, ever! It made me smile all day thinking of them! - Yvonne Marshall

JD GEE: Favors 2/3 of 100 year old traffic law

By JD Gee

The following two paragraphs are from an article headlined "The New Automobile Law," found the May 6, 1914 edition of the Adair County News;
"The new automobile statute is much more stringent than the old one. In addition to fines ranging from $10 to $50, it imposes imprisonment in the county jail for terms of five to thirty days, in the discretion of the court and jury.

"The maximum speed limit is twenty miles an hour. In the residence sections of incorporated cities and towns the speed must not exceed fifteen miles, and in the business section it must be reduced to ten miles."
Twenty miles an hour would be a tad slow for the roads of today, but the other two speed limits..........oh, if only! - JD Gee

Mike Watson: Chelf family - in honor of Knifley Revisited

Knifley Revisited is an all-day celebration which will be held in Knifley, Adair County, KY, on Saturday, September 6, 2014

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

Here is a short biographical sketch of William P. Chelf, Casey Creek region, that I'd like to submit in honor of Knifley's upcoming celebration... MW

Chelf has been a prominent name in Adair County for generations. Lee Roy “L.R.” Chelf operated a very successful mercantile business at Knifley for many years. In honor and support of the Knifley Homecoming and Festival, coming up on September 6th, here submitted for review of CM readers, is an 1887 biographical sketch of William P. Chelf, Casey Creek, and his family. This bio first appeared in Kentucky: A History of the State . . . , by W.H. Battle, J.H. Perrin, G.C. Kniffin, 4th edition, Louisville, Ky, F.A. Battey & Company, 1887. The writing was the style of the day; long, long sentences and quaint turns of phrase were the accepted order. No additions or corrections have been made, except for the brief items that follow the sketch, taken from The Adair County News upon the death of Mrs. Rhoda Chelf. - Mike Watson

Comments re article 68731 A Walkable City would be huge win for Economic Development

By Billy Joe Fudge

Amen, Barry. Many might remember the TV series, "The Guns of Will Sonnet". Will Sonnet's favorite saying was "no brag, just fact".

If the people of Columbia/Adair County want a vibrant Downtown Business and Cultural District then they need to realize the difference between personal opinions and facts.

ADAIR Band practice field fix. Elegant, economical, quick

The ADAIR Band practice field dilemma is solved thanks to the *Power of the Master Mind A group of 10 individuals got together and worked out the plan: Adair County Band Director Tom Case, Band Boosters Mark Harris, Donald Hare, and David Taylor; ACHS Football Coach Travis Gay, ACMS Football Coach John Peck, and ACHS Baseball Coach Mike Mantooth; Student Transportation and Maintenance Director David Jones, Adair County School Board Chairman Floyd Burton, and Superintendent Alan W. Reed. The new plan calls for the band to use an existing Adair County High School Parking lot for the asphalt practice field, and a parallel practice field, separated by an approximately 15 ft median from the parking lot, on an already nearly flat lawn area between John Burr Memorial Gymnasium and Indian Drive. The plan is already being implemented.

By Ed Waggener

By all accounts, Mark Harris, President of the Adair Band Boosters said, it was a great moment when everyone got together to find a solution to the practice field problem the band faced at the start of the 2014-15 school year.
