Remembering Paul Hayes: Champion for education

'He was a quiet but powerful force, who went the extra mile to see that student achievement was spotlighted' - AWR

By Alan W. Reed

All of us in the Adair County School District were very saddened to learn about the passing of Paul Hayes, a champion for education. Paul probably contributed more to the education of our children than many could imagine by supporting our students, teachers and our school programs. He was a quiet but powerful force who went the extra mile to make sure student achievement was spotlighted.

I recall many times when Paul drove many extra miles to come to Knifley, Sparkville, and Shepherd Grade Centers to cover classroom events or sports. As an example of his commitment, he was here to photograph the swearing-in ceremony for Ms. Quinn Lasley on Tuesday morning when we all knew he should be resting. Paul Hayes was a friend, but as a professional journalist, wrote the story the way he saw it whether or not we necessarily agreed.

-Alan Reed, Superintendent
Adair County Schools, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY

LWC Volleyball returns to the NAIA Top-25 Poll

By Dan White

COLUMBIA, KY - Postseason wins against No. 12 Georgetown (KY), No. 23 Grand View (Iowa) and No. 21 Missouri Baptist put the Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team back into the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll at No. 20, officials from the national office announced on Wednesday, December 5, 2012.

The Blue Raiders started the year ranked 20th, but fell out of the poll for the rest of the regular-season after a 2-6 start. A 7-2 record in November, including advancing to the NAIA National Championship final site for the first time, gives Lindsey Wilson a top-20 spot in the postseason poll.

After beating Georgetown in the Mid-South Conference Championship to earn an automatic bid to nationals, Lindsey Wilson continued to win, beating Grand View 3-0 in the opening round. The Blue Raiders finished wrapped up pool play with a 1-2 record in Sioux City, Iowa, beating Missouri Baptist 3-2 in their final match.

After the late-season success, Lindsey Wilson also had its first two student-athletes earn NAIA All-America honors. Senior setter Andrea Taylor and sophomore right side Sarah Anderson were both honorable mention honorees. - Dan White
