Work Ready Community: Soft Skills

An Element of the Work Ethic Skill - Simply put, Soft Skills are the manners of everyday work actions expected of any employee, whether old or young, new or long-time, management or labor

By Doug McCammish
Chairman, Columbia/Adair County Economic Development Authority

We have been asked, "What are these Soft Skills you talk about in the Work Ready Community application?" I agree that the phrase "soft skills" doesn't tell you much. I've had many discussions with local business people about things included in soft skills, but we had never heard of that label - we just wished that the people we hired had the skills. Someone said recently that they had had to terminate more people for lack of soft skills than for any other reason.

Poetry by Robert Stone. Complicity, a sonnet

Complicity - a sonnet reflecting on Mysterious Skin, a play by Prince Gomolvilas
You are the best I know, are wanted words
but dangerous to those who feel unloved
when spoken by admired who undergirds
desires that habit on the weak has shoved.

Two innocents respond but not alike.
Withdrawn the fearful one imagines scars.
Emboldened fearless seeks the unknown strike.
And both are restless, caged by unseen bars.

Dim memory at last yields up a clue,
enkindling hope of resolution found,
and chance provides a meeting of the two
who speaking truth become unbound more bound.

Demeaning secret kept will steer a life
to grim expected unexpected strife.

- Robert Stone, 19 August 2012

Westlake Regional Hospital: Two angels watched over him

Prayer and an air trip to UK Medical Center let him live to tell about it. He plans to be at the Prayer Walk for Westlake this afternoon. It's at Westlake Regional Hospital, 901 Westlake Drive, Columbia, KY, at 4pmCT, Sunday, August 19, 2012, sponsored by the Adair County Ministerial Association at the main entrance to the hospital and is open to the public

By Doug McCammish

Some folks know that, on a Saturday morning in January, 2011, I went to Westlake ER for some help with side effects of a "sinus headache." Thanks to a caring staff, especially two "angels" named Wanda and Carolyn who prayed for me and called others to pray, the real problem was recognized and I was airlifted to UK and treated and lived to tell about it. I am one of many, I'm sure, who have been thankful to have WRH and its staff close by.

Roast Pig and Charles Lamb

I love reading other people's mail. I like the sense of peeking into another's life unbidden. If they are not among the dead and are apt to catch me at it -- all the better. But enough to know that I'm eavesdropping -- even after sixty or ninety years.

Jim: David Akeman - Stringbean - a Bar X Boy 1939

Jim uncovers a little known fact: A future Grand Ole Opry star performed with Casey Jones with mostly Columbia, KY entertainers - though the performance was in Lexington - not Columbia, at WVLK: Stringbean. The nugget is especially appropriate with Columbia's coming of age in the Music Industry with the advent of the Red Brick Recording Studio, at 200 Public Square - Soon

Information from JIM

A misspelling in the first post in the Daily Statesman was repeated in the cutline for the photo of Casey Jones and the Bar X Boys of Columbia, KY - and this proofing problem masked perhaps the greatest significance of the photo: David Akeman (not Aikman) would go on to become the world famous country comedian, Stringbean. Jim writes, "The misspelling is in the cutline of the 1983 photo; most likely, the name was misspelled in the original 1939 photo as well," and sends this link: David Akeman entry in Wikipedia

Thanks, JIM, for letting CM readers know. And if anyone knows if the group with David Akeman ever performed in Columbia, KY, we appreciate getting that information. -EW

Chuck Hinman: 2nd chances - Guardian Angel driving home

This is not in Chuck's IJMA series. It's a message he sent a friend who has been sharing his writing with me. It was written 6 June 2005 - Robert Stone.
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 153 - Leaving the Nest and Early Days of Flying: Bird #2

By Chuck Hinman

After church last night many of you saw a guardian angel (mine) at work. As I left the church area I had checked the traffic from the south and there was none OR it was suitable for me to get on the road.

However before I got the 200 feet or so distance to the Rice Creek road to make a left turn and proceed home, an apparently fast moving pick-up truck had closed the gap from the south and he had to do some fancy driving to avoid hitting me as I was making a left turn.

I know my guardian angel intervened, the pick-up driver drove skillfully enough that he missed me by six feet or more -- making a rapid, unplanned left turn onto Rice Creek road himself and coming to stop in the bar-ditch with no apparent damage to either his truck or my car. Praise the Lord! The pick-up driver, a young man, bounded out of his truck to check my condition -- he couldn't have been nicer. I was so thankful that both of us escaped what except for the grace of God could have been a serious accident.

I have learned this lesson that no matter how wonderful and serene it is in church services and how delightful the after church fellowship is, it is a whole different story when you make the few steps transition to the harmless looking road - IT IS A WAR ZONE - and you better be ready. Perhaps a speed zone for the congested area of our church facility is in order -- I don't know.

Thanks to those of you who interacted with the Lord in your way and thanks to those of you who called out of concern after I reached home. No, there was no contact and I am eternally grateful.

I am not very smart but I do learn quickly once the Lord has given me a second chance. Thank you Lord for second chances in my life.

Chuck Hinman, an email to Alsie Mae Stapleton dated Monday, 6 June 2005, slightly edited

Victoria Pike: Petition signing going well

Despite pending changes at the hospital with Spectrum leaving September 14, 2012, two new board members, and Chairman Jim Evans having only two more months to serve, Committee to Recall the Hospital Tax has been continuing to add signers to their petition. In this article, Vickie Pike tells what is on signers minds: Secrecy, "confidentiality" about critical information, lack of information about investigations, top salaries they think are (or were) out-of-line, and inequities in pay - they want low end salaries untouched by cuts - and other concerns. But she adds, "We too will be praying tomorrow, as we do everyday, for the hardworking, underpaid hospital employees and also for community as a whole," - CM

News and personal commentary from Committee to Recall the Hospital Tax

The last two days have been a true example of democracy at work. People have poured into our little tent on the corner to tell us they are mad as you know what and want to see justice.

We listened as each told their stories of how this tax would effect them and how helpless they feel in trying to get it stopped. They want straight answers as to where all their hard-earned money went before another dollar of taxpayer money is sunk into the hospital.
