Chattanooga Highway: Jumping off place no more

The Road to Chattanooga is getting better every day, as spring weather has allowed construction to resume on the 5.99 mile stretch from this point, once dubbed the Jumping off Place, to Sparksville, thence to Breeding and Burkesville, KY and on to the major C towns in Tennessee: Celina, by Cookeville, and Chattanooga. Junior Stotts, Columbia, KY one of Governor Beshear's closest contacts, predicts the road will be ready by Labor Day, 2011. He did not predict when the Cracker Barrell, Cabello's or Bass Pro Shop might arrive.

Josh Kles of Lindsey Wilson MSC Men's Field Athlete of Week

COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson College's Josh Kles is the Mid-South Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday, April 5, 2011.

The weekly conference honor is the first of the season and career for Kles.

Kles scored a total of 17 points for the Blue Raiders as he scored in the discus, shot put and hammer throw to earn the weekly field honor.

The Jefferson, GA, freshman finished second in both the discus with a throw of 41.79 meters and shot put with a school-record 14.36 meters.

He finished eighth with an attempt of 38.6 meters in the hammer throw.

Shorter (GA) University's Paul Chelimo won the weekly track award after winning the 5,000-meter run at the Pepsi Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida with a time of 14 minutes, 3.36 seconds

The ACHS Lady Indians Basketball team held their banquet on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Lindsey Wilson College. Coach James Turner presented the following awards:
  • Rebound Award: (11 per game), McKenzie Martin
  • Free throw award (71%), Chanley Otterson
  • Defensive award, Hali Wheat
  • Field goal percentage award, (54%), McKenzie Martin
  • 3 point field goal percentage, (36%), Chanely Otterson
  • Assist award, (5 per game), Katie Keltner
  • 110% award, Presley Lawless
  • Academic Award, McKenzie Martin
McKenzie Martin, the only senior on the team, was presented a gift from the booster's club as were the coaches

Dero G. Downing, 4th President of WKU (d. April 4, 2011)

He was one of Kentucky's outstanding educational leaders. His affiliation with Western Kentucky University began as a student continued, after his presidency, to chairman of the board of the College Heights Foundation. As a World War II officer he participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy.

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Dr. Dero G. Downing, fourth president of Western Kentucky University, died Monday at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He was 89.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 7, 2011, 11am-2pmCT. and 4pm-8pmCT. at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, 801 Fairview AV, in Bowling Green, KY. CU to present piano ensemble concert April 7, 2010

Campbellsville University's School of Music will present a piano ensemble concert Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 8pmET/7pmCT in the Gheens Recital Hall of the Gosser Fine Arts Center, located at 210 University DR, Campbellsville, KY. The event is free and open to the public.

The ensemble will perform works for piano, four hands to two pianos, eight hands.

The ensemble consists of Mina An of South Korea and Wei-Sian Chen of Taiwan. They will be assisted by Yuri Kim and Eunhye Lee, both of South Korea, as well as Dr. M. Wesley Roberts, professor of music at Campbellsville University. - Christina Miller

It is William Shakespeare, but probably not like you have seen it before, according to Lindsey Wilson College Assistant Professor of Theater Robert Brock. Brock will direct a production of Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream. The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. CT on April 13, 14 and 16, 2011, in the LWC V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson ST, Columbia, KY. The cost of admission is $5.

Seminar at LWC examines world of new business financing

Reception April 9 at Lindsey Wilson for Artist Larry Parker

A reception will be held from 10am-12 noon CT on Saturday, April 9, 2011. for regional artist Larry Parker in the Lucretia C. Begley Art Gallery, in the W.W. Slider Humanities Center, 155 Blue Raider DR, Columbia, KY.

Parker, an LWC alumnus who studied under the late Helen G. Flatt, is displaying paintings of regional locations and attractions, including the Janice Holt Giles House.

Cassie Rogers is 2011 Bernice Flowers Scholarship recipient
