A letter from Adair Co. Judge Executive Ann Melton

It is with much regret that I must lift the Executive Order to lower Adair County Flags to half-staff. It seems that I have offended some citizens and particularly some Veterans of Adair County.

I never thought that any one life was any more important than another, but as one young lady said, "this town has been turned upside down." I believe that this community has shown a deep love for our young people and it was meant to honor the life of a young woman who loved her community, her family, and most of all, her God.

To the Hadley family and all who have lost loved ones, our hearts are heavy for your loss.

To those who were offended, my deepest regrets. I have a strong love for all veterans, and no citizen or veteran loves this country more than I do.

Thanks you and God bless!

Sincerely,

ANN MELTON
Adair County Judge/Executive

Thinks balanced diet in home and school needed

Right diet would eliminate some obesity as well as many other helath problems of our children, she says

About: Epicurean Kentuckian: School pizza

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree with Sharmarie the meal looks delicious and I am sure is delicious, but is this the meal our school children should be eating every day?

Three out of the four items served are loaded with carbohydrates and calories. I still believe a well balanced diet at school and home would eliminate some of the obesity of our children as well as other health problems.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Decisions

Picked up at a McDonald's, Versailles, Woodford Co., KY

by Dave Rosenbaum

How to Eat a Burrito

As everyone knows, every McDonalds Restaurant in Kentucky has a group of regulars for morning coffee, usually retired men who use the time to discuss all the world's problems and craft solutions for all sorts of situations.

A friend of mine recently observed a group of gentlemen at the Versailles McDonalds.

One of the men was holding a breakfast burrito in one hand and a cell phone in the other. Apparently it was the first burrito that the gentleman had ever eaten. My friend overheard him calling someone to ask which end of the burrito one should bite first.

Although he was sitting with a group of his friends, he apparently couldn't rely on the advice of any of them and was forced to telephone another person for wise counsel.

Hardscratch essay reminds Jim of Royville, KY store

For the uninitiated, Greater Royville stretches out along KY 80 from inside Adair County line, plumb clean to Russell Springs, KY, and was, for many years, the "going to town" town for a wide area of Adair and Russell County; it is the Texarkana of South Central Kentucky, so to speak, crossing the most definitive county line, to those living right up against it, in the world; though a Martian would scarcely notice a hair of difference. -CM

About: From Hardscratch: Friendships and great times more precious than gold

By "Jim"

Mr. Hill's wonderful essay brings to mind a dead-certain fact of rural life: until you've been a member of a general store family, either as owner, shopper, loafer, or (as in my case) a kid underfoot keeping a wary eye on the adults, you haven't lived.

When I was but a wee tot (about two years after the last known pterodactyl sighting), my folks owned and ran a general store smack-dab in the middle of the greater Royville, KY, metroplex.

Letter: Charity begins at home

About: Good feeling reading about migrant school program

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:
Yes, charity is the Christian thing for all of us. I don't know, all of these children may be legal immigrants or American citizens, which makes this all well and good.

If any are illegals then in my mind it is a different story, at some point we are going to have to stop the give away programs. This great country of ours is beyond broke and it is only going to be worse for our children and grandchildren.

Candlelight Vigil for Hillary Hadley

By Richard Raines

I'd just like to say how proud I was of the young people of our community last night at the candlelight vigil.

The vast majority stood in line up to an hour or more to shake hands or hug Maxie and Kathy. I'm also proud of the many adults that stood in line; I know many of them had to be up early to go to work today.

From Hardscratch:
Friendships and great times more precious than gold

Regular ColumbiaMagazine.com advertiser Ken Hill has a lot going on at the Hardscratch General Store, especially getting ready for tonight's Fish Fry. This country correspondent style newsletter is packed with great information from today, to 70 years ago, to treatises on 1st and 2nd amendments to constitution. The only thing he forgot was "a good time was had by all," but the editor has appended that

By Ken Hill
News from the Village of Hardscratch, KY

In one of my favorite episodes of the Andy Griffith Show, Barney was given a stainless steel wristwatch to commemorate five years of service to the folks of Mayberry.

It was difficult for him to believe five years had passed so quickly, just as it is here in Hardscratch. August 15th will mark our five year portion of the 70+ years our little store has been serving the wonderful people of Hardscratch and surrounding areas.

Wants to remember Hillary Hadley in special way

About: Candlelight memorial for Hillary Hadley tonight

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to remember Hillary in a special way, but am not sure what to do. My heart bleeds for her family and friends. Please advise me as to if they will be setting up a memorial of some kind in the future. Such as a scholarship in her name or if I could make a donation to a favorite charity of Hillary's.

I remember the girls at the Joe Johnson ball field as they played with my son; it seems so long ago now. Cathy, May you and your family and Hillary's friends find peace in your faith. If I can ever help in any way please call me, as I'll alway's remember how much you have helped me in the past.

s/Cindi A. Burton

Thanks. CM is still awaiting the obituary; perhaps information about opportunities to remember Hillary Hadley in a special way will be in that. -CM
