From Hardscratch:
Friendships and great times more precious than gold

Regular ColumbiaMagazine.com advertiser Ken Hill has a lot going on at the Hardscratch General Store, especially getting ready for tonight's Fish Fry. This country correspondent style newsletter is packed with great information from today, to 70 years ago, to treatises on 1st and 2nd amendments to constitution. The only thing he forgot was "a good time was had by all," but the editor has appended that

News from the Village of Hardscratch, KY

In one of my favorite episodes of the Andy Griffith Show, Barney was given a stainless steel wristwatch to commemorate five years of service to the folks of Mayberry.

It was difficult for him to believe five years had passed so quickly, just as it is here in Hardscratch. August 15th will mark our five year portion of the 70+ years our little store has been serving the wonderful people of Hardscratch and surrounding areas.

Most of the same customers who welcomed us on our first morning still visit everyday. We could not have made it this far without such an outpouring of community support, and we thank everyone for helping keep this dream alive.

'Bathroom' instructions still on men's room wall

We have made a few changes in the old place over five years, and several in the past few months. We completely remodeled our bathrooms, but don't worry we left the "Bathroom Instructions" posted on the new wall in the men's room.

Regular customers now used to air conditioning

Also, it has taken some "getting used to" on the part of our regular customers, but the new air conditioning system has been welcomed on these 100 degree days. Those who still prefer to sweat while they eat are welcome to sit on the front porch.

Jake has taken store learning to CWC

Another big change is that Jake Hill has taken everything he learned in the store and is now applying that knowledge in Kindergarten classes at Col. William Casey School. You can still catch him on weekends and Catfish Nights. He still wanders from table to table and randomly chooses new friends. We are especially thankful for everyone who helped to raise Jake in the store. You are a valued part of our family.

Again, we sincerely thank everyone who walks through our door. If you haven't been here before, we invite you to give us a try. We are open 7 days a week, we serve a cooked-to-order breakfast at 5:00 A.M., and we cook our famous catfish on the 2nd and last Fridays of each month. We guarantee you will like it or you don't have to pay.

1st Amendment alive and well in Hardscratch

The 1st Amendment is alive and well in the dining room, as most world problems are discussed and solved on a daily basis.

We also support the 2nd Amendment

We also support the 2nd Amendment by selling and trading guns every Tuesday. The few who didn't like their cheeseburger served with a side of .357 Magnums will be happy to know we have moved the firearms to our recently acquired annex building across the road.

A special thanks to valued employees.

We also send a special "Thank You" to our valued employees. We could not make it without Diane, Dee Dee, Scotty, and Janeatte.

Come join us tonight for Catfish served with a generous portion of friendship in comfortable, relaxed surroundings. But please...no stainless wristwatches. The friendships and great times here in the Village of Hardscratch are more precious than gold.

A good time has been had by all . . . and they continue at our place, Hardscratch General Store, 7289 Hwy 55 South RD, Columbia, KY, in the Village of Hardscratch, KY, aka Glens Fork, Glensfork, and Glenville.
