Wildflowers of KY: Purple passion flower

2009-08-12 - Metcalfe Co., KY - Photo by Johnnietta Jessie.
Johnnietta Jessie took this photo and wondered what kind of plant it is. We'll defer to more experienced botanist, but it appears to be a purple passion flower, also known as an Ocoee or wild apricot or Maypop. Pen found one in the Haven Hill Cemetery and posted it earlier. The plant is the state flower of Tennesssee. And, in our files is the award winning photo by Kristy Keene, Purple Passion Flower Fireworks

Information wanted on Henry and Richard Skaggs land

This item was originally intended for a Metcalfe Co. publication; it didn't make it this week in time for the Third Sunday in August at Sulphur Well, KY this weekend, August 15 and 16, 2009. It is reprinted here on Ginny Keen's promise to send her cousin's story of "The Tree," about a beloved gnarly hickory at the the Boston Cemetery in Metcalfe County, to be reprinted in a future ColumbiaMagazine.com.

By Ginny Keen

For many years I have researched the land off of Tommy Scroggy Rd. My family cemetery is there and I have traced that land all the way back to the beginning of Kentucky.<

Adair County quilt should be put on display

About: Nominates Norma Parnell work for Official Adair County Quilt

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree with Terry Partin that the Adair Co. quilt should be where everyone in the county can view it. Norma Jean is my aunt and I saw the quilt in person at the family reunion and it is truly a work of art. I'm sure countless hours went into this quilt before the quilting even began. It should be put somewhere for a couple of months on display where everyone could go by and see it.

Adair Fiscal Court August 13, 2009 report

In the August 13, 2009, meeting of the Adair Fiscal Court
    • Treasury dips a little, but still very strong
    • Noise issues brings large delegation to meeting
    • But litter situation is showing great improvement. New baler, second recycling trailer coming
    • More roads get relief from speeding; number of roads eligible for golf cart use ordinances grows from 42
    • Court will help Adair County Youth Football League
    • County road work at a feverish pace
    • Jail policies changed on records, inmate transportation
    • Judicial center construction on schedule; rotunda to be raised; four face clocktower will be added
    • Buy, Sell, Swap and Trade going countywide
    • Animal shelter shows low July adoption rates, raising cost to county

By, with comment by Ed Waggener

Adair County's treasury dips a little, but is still very strong. Adair County's treasury dip below $1,000,000 million dollars at the end of July, but that is probably the low point of the year, County Treasurer Barry Corbin reported last night. The reconciled balance was $950,576.39 on July 31, 2009, he told the court.

Funds for roads are already coming in since July 30, 2009, adding to the funds balances in August, he said. The treasurer expects the healthy and growing year-to-year balances Adair County Fiscal Court has enjoyed in administration of Judge Ann Melton to continue.
