From Governor Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, Ky. Governor Steve Beshear announced today that 23 school districts were funded to retrofit 690 school buses around the Commonwealth. The source of funding is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The availability of the funds was announced in April of this year resulting in 35 school districts applying with nearly $2 million in funding requested.

I am pleased to announce that as a result of this funding, over 202,000 students will benefit from this program. Air, both in the bus cabin and outside of the buses, will be cleaner, resulting in less student and staff absenteeism from health concerns such as asthma, said Gov. Beshear.

The school districts that were funded are: Ashland Independent School District, Corbin Independent Schools, Daviess County Public Schools, Elizabethtown Independent Schools, Floyd County Schools, Frankfort Independent Schools, Franklin County Public Schools, Gallatin County Schools, Grayson County Schools, Jefferson County Public Schools, Lincoln County School District, Livingston County Schools, Madison County Schools, Marion County Public Schools, Montgomery County Schools, Owsley County Schools, Pike County Schools, Pulaski County School System, Somerset Independent Schools, Spencer County Public Schools, Taylor County Schools, Trigg County Public Schools, and Warren County Public Schools. The map below indicates the distribution of funds around the state.

The buses will be retrofitted with a combination of diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel multi-stage filters, and crankcase shaft filters. The funding also purchased diesel particulate filter cleaning machines and replacement filters for the crankcase shaft filters. Pollution will also be reduced by many districts that incorporated idle reduction plans or policies into their Clean School Bus programs.
