First Lady Beshear launches KY Governor's Garden website

Kentucky inspired by White House effort to lead by example to raise "green" awareness across nation. "By growing crops in backyards across Kentucky or buying locally grown produce, families can eliminate wasteful burning of fossil fuels and have access to fresher, healthier produce," said Mrs. Beshear

from the Commonwealth News Center

FRANKFORT, Ky. - First Lady Jane Beshear today announced the launch of the Governor's Garden official Web site as part of her larger Green Team initiative.

Leading by example is imperative for teaching Kentuckians how to live more sustainable, environmentally friendly lifestyles. Inspired by the White House's commitment to homegrown produce and fueled by a desire to raise "green" awareness, Mrs. Beshear recently joined with leaders from the Finance and Administration Cabinet, Western Hills High School, Kentucky Proud and Access Food Pantry to develop and grow the first ever Governor's Garden. The Governor's Garden has already produced 200 pounds of food that has been donated to Access Food Pantry in Frankfort.

Wants more on CV/Coburg, Dulworth, Egypt/Jericho/Bull Run

Richard Robertson writes about: Preserving History: Old East Fork School at Bridgeport
I hardily support Johnnietta Jessie in her urging to preserve history. I have had recent conversations with a couple of the remaining one-room school teachers. Thanks, Johnnietta for reminding me to document those interviews.

The one room school houses, their teachers and students, along with the now defunct past communities are of a great interest to me. I have a copy of a deed from my Grandfather's (Olen Robertson) property purchase dated 1920. It lists his residence as Dulworth. I believe this was an area now flooded, which was in the Corbin's Bend area on the river. Am I right?

Anybody with information on this or experiences, recollections or photos of one-room schoolhouses, please contact me here on lower Bull Run at your convenience. My main school interest is the Cane Valley/Coburg area and the Egypt/Jericho/Bull Run area. Oh, thanks for the great photo! I plan to make a trip and get my the school taken.(270) 384-9596 or richardrobertson@windstream.net

Save the Courthouse Comment: Make entrance to cave

Save the Courthouse. Do we have a ghost? story with pictures by Linda Waggener

By Ed Waggener

Bobby Jessie of Del City, OK, called this morning with a suggestion for the Old Courthouse. "Why not make an entrance to the cave under it and charge admission?" he asked.

It was an idea worthy of the Great Thinkers of the Ages, even Joe Moore.

Please adopt great black kitty with green eyes

Richard Robertson of Lower Bull Run writes
Will somebody please adopt a Coal Black longhaired kitty that has holed-up in my garage, despite the seige intended by my terriers. She/he is pretty with green eyes, and tough. She/he sent my 33 lb. Decker fleeing through the barn door weeks ago, when it was just a baby, and these dogs have killed coons in the yard. If I did not have cat allergies, I would change my dogs' attitudes about cats and have Barnaby/Barnette fixed and kept as a barn cat. Two or this of this litter has been killed crossing Bull Run from creek to farm. Help me out please.-Richard Robertson, Lower Bull Run, Columbia, KY (270) 384-9596

Click on headline for album, photos as added. Reunions

by Shamarie Claiborne

The Hamlett family reunion was held Saturday, August 1, 2009, at the home of Jimmy and Patricia Harper in the Jones-Wright Addition to the City of Columbia.

Some 50 family members were present, enjoying great food, though there was disagreement as to what was best. Some said it was Uncle Ricky Hamlett's white cake, made from scratch. Some said it was Aunt Norma Jean's Mississippi Mud Cake. Miss Caroline Hardwick, who has the last say, generally, said it was the fried chicken, her favorite food.

I'd like to follow the lead of Dr. Huff and sponsor a local child for ACYF on behalf of the Lindsey Wilson College Football program. Our community is fortunate to have the youth athletic programs that it does, and I hope that we can ensure that no children are denied this opportunity due to financial obstacles. -Chris Oliver
