Ordell Fudge and Callie Cat

2009-06-27 - Sparksville Rd, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
EVERYONE SHOULD BE SO LUCK: Ordell Fudge and his Callie Cat talk to each other, he says. He talks, she undertands. He laughs when he tells about the conversatios. Mrs. Fudge will them talking, and there's company, When she comes out and finds he's talking to the cat, she scolds him, he says, wondering wht people will think. Ordell Fudge, who once had over 300 acres along the road, now has the best job in Adair County. Sitting on his front porch, watching the light traffic on KY 768, looking over the sleek black cattle on the the pastures across the road he cleared and maintained and made living doing it, and most of all, sharing his wisdom with all, being a friend to man, and always having a devoted friend to talk to when all the people are away.

Final date for crop acreage report is due July 15, 2009

By Tony Corbin

The final date to complete a crop acreage report for the 2009 crop year is July 15, 2009. Farmers who participate in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs through the Farm Service Agency should file a crop acreage report annually to retain program eligibility.

A complete acreage report is required for farms participating in the Direct and Counter-cyclical Program (DCP), Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) or requesting a commodity loan or Loan Deficiency Payment (LDP). All farmers are encouraged to file an acreage report in order to establish the cropping history for their farms. Farms that fail to file an acreage report timely will be charged a late filing fee after July 15 to remain eligible for USDA benefits.

For more information or any questions you might have contact the Columbia FSA Service Center at (270) 384-6431 for assistance.

Beautiful fallow field shows benefits of CREP program

About: A fallow field: Nature preparing soil in a beautiful field
Click on headline for complete article plus original photo, now attached to this wonderful commentary

By Jason Stephens

Don't make the mistake of believing this is just an ordinary stand of wild flowers.

It is in fact, an unparalleled effort between landowners in Adair County, the Adair County Conservation District, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the USDA Farm Service Agency, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. and The Nature Conservancy. I see the fruits of the CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program).

Edwards-Obanion VFW named for George Edwards

About: Autograph party CU July 4 2009 for book on Taylor Co soldiers

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I wish I had known about this book before publication. My great uncle. George Edwards. died in WWI in France and his name is on the monument. Also, the Edwards-O'Banyon VFW is named after him.

His nieces in Columbia, Emily Sargent and Mary Frances May could've given information to include in the book.

s/Arthur Sargent

Thanks. Perhaps the Mass Communications Department, or some other Taylor County group, will compile a book on soldiers of World War I. This particular Book is limited to stories of soldiers from World War II. Also, we'd love to have the story of George Edwards to post of CM, and will contact The Sisters to see if a story can be arranged. -EW

Comment: First things first on AC courthouse next life

Hopes civil public discussion will address limited and dangerous access issue, give serious consideration to new urban dynamics to eliminate defeatist benedictions too many pronounce on the future of the historic landmark

By Billy Joe Fudge

It looks like a community discussion is going to begin in a more formal fashion on the 30th concerning the future of our Adair County Courthouse. I do want to thank Judge Melton for this progressive effort to involve "the folks" at this critical, landmark time concerning the change that is soon to be taking place in Downtown Columbia.

Hopefully, a civil public discussion about the future of our Adair County Courthouse and how the resulting new urban dynamics are going to come to bear on the future of Downtown Columbia will enhance all our thinking processes and expand the parameters of thinking which now restrict public access and economic development.

'It is inhumane not to provide trees in parking lots,' writer says

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I appreciated your comment of awareness of increased heat when there is a large expanse of blacktop. Some cities have mandated trees be planted in parking lots to provide a large percentage of shade in the time frame of 15 years.

I have read that the city and county have approved funds for blacktopping a lot behind a senior citizens center. I do not know if small islands of trees are planned, but I think it is inhumane to not provide trees in parking lots. Tree islands give physical benefits as well as psychological benefits. Can you do anything about getting a few tree islands established in this lot that is soon to be paved?

s/Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Thanks. More and more people are in agreement with you. My hope is that people will be given higher priority. -EW
