81 players participate in the 2007 CKTS Columbia Open

Tournament has doubled in size since first CKTS series began with 2003 Columbia Open

This past weekend, July 21 and 22, Columbia was home to the Columbia Open, the 4th tournament of the year in the 2007 Central Kentucky Tennis Series. A record 81 players competed in this years event.

Five of the players participating in the tournament were from Adair County.

ACHS Indians Football will hold Corn Hole Tournament

Adair County Indians Football will be holding a Corn Hole Tournament on Friday, August 3, 2007, at 7:30pm. The tournament will be immediatly following the ACHS Football Blue/White scrimmage. The fee will be $30.00 for each two person team.

Plate lunch dinners will be available for purchase during the nights activities, with cooking be provided by Johnny Jones. Anyone needing more information please contact Coach Clark Teague at (270) 384-0927.

Everyone come out for a fun night of activities helping supporting the Adair County Indians Football.

CWC Open House is Tuesday, August 7, 2007

Col. Wm. Casey Elementary will conduct Open House for all 2007-2008 CWC Preschool-2nd grade students on Tuesday, August 7, from 4:00pm 6:00pm CT. Students are invited to come and meet their teacher as well as see their new room and visit will old friends.

CWC Kindergarten Kick-Off is August 2, 2007

Col. Wm. Casey Elementary will conduct the 2nd Annual Kindergarten Kick-Off for incoming CWC kindergarteners and their families on Thursday, August 2, 2006 at 5:00pm CT in the school gym. The evening will include introduction of staff, tours of the school, school information, and load of fun on the old football field after the event! All students who will be entering kindergarten at Col. Wm. Casey are invited to attend!!! The first full day of kindergarten is Friday, August 10, 2007.

Gov. Fletcher sends Adair checks totaling $334,000!

Mayor gets $94,000 Safe Routes to Schools grant for City for sidewalks in Columbia near Adair Schools. CJE Ann Melton and Adminsitrative Assistant Lisa Lee pick up two grants for Adair County: $164,580 will widen, blacktop the magical Neat Hollow Road from KY 206 to Little Cake Road. $75,290 will take the turns, widen the roadway, on Ray Scott Hill between Pellyton and Knifley.

Governor Ernie Fletcher's chief of staff, Stan Cave, and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) officials awarded over $334,000 in funding that will be used to improve bike and walking routes around local Adair County schools and resurface various county routes. Cave spoke about the importance of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project.

Obituary: John Paul Blevins, 65, Metcalfe County attorney

He was a gifted man, who is remembered for his athletic prowess, his keen intellect, his talent for taking the measure of others, and for his great wit and command of the language

John Paul Blevins, retired Metcalfe County Attorney and one of Old Met's favorite sons, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at his home in Edmonton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Butler Funeral Home, 201 East Street, on the Courthouse Square, in Edmonton, KY. Eulogies will be delivered by Jim Howard and his son, J.P. Blevins.

ACES Open House is Monday, August 6, 2007

Principal Robbie Harmon announces that the Adair County Elementary School (ACES) Open House will be Monday, August 6, 2007, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm CT.

Parents and students can also see homeroom lists for the 2007-2008 school year at ACES. They are posted on the front windows of the school.

The Simpsons Movie coming Thursday at midnight to Columbian

Harry Potter will be shown through Thursday evening

Starting Friday July 27th we have The Simpsons Movie (2007). It is rated PG-13 andwill play nightly at 6:00 and 8:00pm and Sunday at 2:00 and 4:00pm only.

There will be a special midnight show of The Simpsons on Thursday, July 26, 2007.

Also, the Columbian will still be showing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix thru Thursday the 26th. It playsnightly at 6:00 and 9:00 pm. All times are Central.

Sixth District constable attends domestic violence training

Constable Jason Rector, and many other Kentucky Constables, attended Domestic Violence: Understanding and Responding to Survivors of Violence training held in Frankfort through the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association on Saturday, July 21, 2007.

Reporting from the meeting, the Sixth Adair County District Constable writes:


"During this training the Kentucky Revised Statute for Domestic Violence was defined; informational statistics given such as in fiscal year 2003, 26,823 EPOs and 13,897 DVOs were issued by Kentucky Courts and is ever increasing today.

State working with Federal officials to reduce food risks

Current outbreak of botulism has not affected Kentucky

Public health scientists and food safety experts in Kentucky are working with federal officials to reduce the risk of possible foodborne illness in association with an outbreak of botulism affecting consumers in Texas and Indiana who ate canned hot dog chili sauce. No cases linked to this outbreak have been reported in Kentucky.

Due to possible contamination with botulinum toxin, the Kentucky Department for Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are advising not to eat certain canned food products manufactured by Castleberrys Food Company.

Account set up to support Flame trip to Akron

The A/C Flame Jr. League State Champions are in the process of collecting funds to play in the Jr. League Regional Tournament in Akron, Ohio starting August 3. 2007. Any donation would be greatly appreciated and an account has been set up at First National Bank, United Citizens Bank and Bank of Columbia. These girls are resprsenting the State of Kentucky but more importantly they are representing Columbia & Adair County. We as parents know that these young ladies will make our city, county and the state proud. Thank you in advance The PARENTS of A/C FLAME.

Duck Race will benefit Parks & Recreation

The Columbia Parks and Recreations board is sponsoring the first Great Columbia "Quacky, Wacky" Duck Race. Instead of purchasing a ticket on the Holland Grill from Reeders Appliances you will be given a number that will correspond with a numbered rubber duck the day of the race.

The Duck race will be held on Monday, September 3, 2007, and will start around the Russell Creek Bridge area going into Green Hills and the finish line will be around the Russell Creek Bridge on KY 206. The first duck to cross the line will be the winner. You do not have to be present to win.

Emily Griffitt Anderson murder: 8 links, trial, defendant release

Word of death of John Paul Blevins, 65

The sad word of the death on Sunday, July 22, 2007, of former Metcalfe County Attorney John Paul Blevins has been received. Blevins died at his home in Edmonton. We are awaiting the full obituary from Butler Funeral Home, Edmonton, KY. Butler Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangement.
