KSP, KDE issue statement on recent school threats

From Sherry Bray/Jennifer Ginn

Frankfort, KY - In response to several school threats that have occurred across the commonwealth this week, the Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Department of Education have issued the below statements.

"Kentucky State Police will continue to work with school resource officers, local law enforcement and school administrators to ensure the safety of all students. As a trooper and a father who has children in our school system, I can assure you that we will take any threat seriously and make arrests where possible." -Kentucky State Police Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr.

"There is no greater trust - or responsibility - that can be given to our schools than a parent or guardian saying he or she trusts us with his or her child. While we are concerned about the amount of time our students are missing due to these hoaxes, our primary concern is the safety and well-being of the students and staff members that are in our schools every day across Kentucky. We ask our families to talk with their students about the very real and serious consequences that can happen if they call in a threat against another student or their school. A threat like this can result in a student facing suspension, expulsion and/or alternative placements, in addition to the consequences from our justice system." -Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher

Kentucky State Police and Kentucky Department of Education urge parents to have a conversation with their children about the dangers and consequences of posting threatening messages on social media or online. Families should also speak with their children about reporting any concerning information they may come across on social media or online to an adult. Ensuring that any information reported is accurate and truthful is crucial, as false reports can lead to unnecessary fear and confusion. However, KSP emphasizes that this should not discourage anyone from reporting potential crimes or threats.

Remember to check your registration before Oct 7

From Lisa Greer, Adair County Clerk

Even if you're already registered to vote, you should check your registration before the October 7, 2024 deadline.

To confirm you are registered, to verify your address and voting precinct, or to register for the first time, visit GoVote.KY.gov. It's especially important to check your registration if you've changed address since the last election.
  • Did you move WITHIN your county?
Where you reside affects what precinct-specific ballot you receive. If you move within your county, you will always be able to vote but you will need to update your address.

  • Did you move to another county?
Where you reside affects and what ballot you receive. October 7, 2024 is the deadline to update your address so you can vote in the General Election.
Kentucky provides mail-in absentee voting for those with a valid excuse, as well as in-person absentee voting. We also have early no-excuse voting on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Election Day. Of course, there is also Election Day!

Carol Perkins: One box can change a life

Previous Column: Little Bit and Bruno

By Carol Perkins

By now, everyone knows my passion for the Samaritan's Purse Shoebox Mission. As projects leaders, my friend and I attended a workshop in Greensburg. One of our speakers was a young man, Thomas, who had received a shoebox when he was thirteen.

He couldn't reveal his country (or village) for fear of endangering the Christians who lived there (2%) or the missionaries who worked under the radar. His story was that of poverty and bullying (because he was a Christian). He told about wearing clothes three or four layers down from cousins and eating muddy rice that his mother, who made $12 a month, bought from the government. "She washed and washed that rice until most of the mud disappeared." The most heart-wrenching account had to do with a pencil.
