Carol Perkins: The search

Previous Column: A Humbled Heart

By Carol Perkins

I lost my glasses this week. First, my phone, and then my glasses. After cataract surgery, I don't need them for distance, but I can't read without them. I can't sew or bead necklaces. The highway becomes fuzzy.

Wearing glasses has become a habit. Taking reading glasses on and off is a pain. However, for small print, I depend on them, which explains why I have so many pairs all over the house.

I knew they were in the house because I had baked a cake that required reading the recipe. I knew I had them when I sat in my recliner that afternoon to finish a good book. I had them when I took them off, put on my "sleep" mask, and told Guy I was going to "shut my eyes for a few minutes."

After those few minutes passed, I jumped up to rush to the bathroom, slinging my blanket across the floor, along with my book and, I thought, my glasses. When I returned, I picked up the book but no glasses. Had I imagined my glasses were in my lap?

Two days later, I was still looking for them.
