Phillip Coffey - Wet Floor

Wet Floor - By Phillip Coffey

Too many foot pounds applied to a spatula removed from a drawer.
Spaghetti across the floor - laughing heartedly before
retreating from my wife - but wait, saved by unheard bells
Off to work she must trod - as announced by the Workers Compensation Board.

Healing from a fractured left arm - Ulna and Radius as well.
Light duty she must do as proscribed by the Orthopedic Surgeon
- no pulling or pushing Beyond a pound, carrying supplement of
pain meds and cold, remaining food dish to her car.
Now here I stand in the kitchen with a mop, sopping up the cleaned wet floor.

Letter: NOAA weather alarm

Marie Freeman writes:
You can buy an alarm with our local frequency from NOAA weather. There's a little bit of programming, but it's not too difficult set up. And if this alarm doesn't wake you up, you're a hard sleeper, it has a battery back up. I keep mine right beside my bed, so it wakes me up. Midland, MROWR120B, WR120B Weather Alert. Sell at Walmart for around $35.00 It's similar to a scanner. It picks up the frequency from NOAA weather. It has a blaring alarm.

Opinion: Adair County taxes

By Wendy Butler Burt

My mother's move to Adair County almost 50 years ago in the mid-1970s unlocked a new world for me. The people here were so interesting and friendly. The land was gorgeous. And although I didn't live here, I began to think of Adair County as some version of Brigadoon - an almost enchanted place where life was simpler and easier, untouched by many of the worries of the modern world.

OK, that was a bit naive, but I was enchanted by the "old-timers" who regaled me with tales of their lives along the creeks and ridges in southern Adair County. I loved driving down dirt roads and right through a creek. I loved that summer hillsides were illuminated by uncounted fireflies and that there were so many new-to-me, colorful birds. I was fascinated by still-standing log houses, tales of long-standing family feuds, and learning to weave baskets with just-gathered creek "willers." I'd never lived or even been anywhere that had such a feel of so long ago.....

Outdoor Warning Sirens

From Mike Keltner, Director
Adair Co. Emergency Management

In reply to a question about warning sirens.

Outdoor warning sirens are meant to notify persons that are outside. They are meant to give attention to someone to seek more information or shelter if during a severe weather outbreak.

They are useful in certain situations and Adair County has them in place in areas like the schools, outdoor sporting areas, the college, and a couple smaller communities with Amish populations without phones, radios or electricity.
