New testing, vaccine program in state-run health care facilities

Update from Governor's Office, Aug 3, 2021: Additional steps are being taken at state-run health care facilities including universal masking, additional testing and strong encouragement of vaccinations. To clarify: vaccinations are further encouraged at these facilities, not currently required.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, August 2, 2021, Gov. Andy Beshear discussed the latest on the COVID-19 delta variant in Kentucky and explained how Kentucky is leading by example with a new testing and vaccine program at state-run health care facilities.

"We are back into a period of time where a whole lot of things are moving - in the public sector, at the federal level - and we are learning more about the delta variant," said Gov. Beshear. "The delta variant is spreading like wildfire. This variant is spreading faster than anything we have seen. If you're unvaccinated, you are at significant risk."

Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Eric Friedlander, who joined the Governor on Monday, explained that universal masking will be required in all state-run health care facilities, including veterans nursing homes, effective tomorrow, Aug. 3. In addition, following the recommendation of the Long-Term Care Task Force, the cabinet will require all contractors and state employees working in these state-operated facilities be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Oct. 1, unless there is a religious or medical reason they cannot be vaccinated. If any of the staff in these facilities is unvaccinated, they will be tested at least twice weekly for their safety and the safety of the Kentuckians they serve.

TJ Regional Health warns of phone scams

By Stacey Biggs

We have been notified that scammers have recently called patients posing as employees of T.J. Regional Health. The wording may vary, but in general, the caller states that they are updating their records and are then asking for the patient's Medicare number and/or other private information.

Representatives from T.J. Regional Health will only contact you in conjunction with a service you are planning to have or have already completed (such as a doctor's visit, a test or a procedure). They will not ask for personal information over the phone -- insurance information is gathered in-person on patients' initial visits.

If you receive a call of this nature, it's okay - and even encouraged - to be skeptical and to protect yourself by asking questions and confirming that the call is legitimate. Feel free to ask the caller for the name of their supervisor, and to call the main hospital number at 270.651.4444 to make sure that you're talking to a legitimate representative of T.J. Regional Health.

Bloom where you are planted

By Angie Neat

As the beginning of another school year is quickly approaching, thoughts of a very special person are ever present in my mind. Pam Geisselhardt.

To know her was to love her! Pam was a wonderful person and an AMAZING teacher! She was a fierce advocate for students and for public education. She put the students first, always. Showing others how to be the best version of themselves just seemed to come naturally for her. She served as a mentor to me during the KTIP process, which has made a lasting impact on me and my approach to teaching. The year that I taught Kindergarten Reading Intervention at CWC, she bought some items to decorate my classroom.

I remember her telling me not to feel pressured to use the decorations if I didn't like them, but to hear her out as to why she chose what she did. The theme she had chosen for me was "Bloom where you are planted." The sentiment behind the theme was that it's ok to not be exactly where everyone else is, that we can be growing and learning where we are academically and at our own pace, thus we can bloom right where we are planted. Needless to say, I fell in love with the theme and wholeheartedly agreed that it was perfect. (Even if I hadn't loved it, Pam probably would have used them anyway!:-) )

I'm in another school district now, but Pam's influence continues to guide my path. This upcoming school year will find me in a challenging, but rewarding, assignment. I began the process earlier in July of getting my room ready for my kids and of course my theme had to be what Pam chose all those years before. Oh, how I wish she could be here to see my room and to share advice with me from her experiences. I miss her laughter and wittiness, but most of all I miss the life lessons from her. I hope she knew how much she was loved! I will always remember her passion for teaching and learning. This past Saturday was the 7th anniversary of her death. I miss her all the time, but her legacy lives on in my classroom.

LRC: New guidance on citizens attending legislative meetings

By Mike Wynn, LRC

Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians may continue to attend legislative committee meetings in person and vaccinated guests are not required to wear a mask in committee rooms, according to the latest guidance from the Legislative Research Commission (LRC).

Visitors attending legislative committee meetings should enter the Capitol Annex through the visitor's entrance, located at the center doors on the front of the building.

Fully vaccinated guests are not required to wear a mask in committee rooms or other areas controlled by the LRC. However, they may still wear a mask at their discretion. Unvaccinated guests should wear a mask at all times. All guests should be prepared to wear a mask in areas controlled by the state executive branch.

The LRC will continue to spread out audience seats in committee rooms for social distancing purposes. If a meeting is expected to attract significant interest, an overflow room will be available so that anyone who cannot find a seat in the primary meeting room may still view the meeting in real time.

History Monday: Preserving documents for future generations

By Mike Watson
Adair County Genealogy and History Research Center

The Adair County Genealogy and History Research Center continues to grow in many ways. We are constantly adding to our collections. Some items are unique. This is a photograph of a small Bible. We do not have this in our collection at this time, but we hope to add it or a scan of the contents at a later date.

This is a Civil War era pocket testament (photo below), carried into the field by a soldier from this area. The soldier inscribed his name and some personal information. When he came home from the War he continued to add vital information as the years rolled by. In time his family line became extinct, but this gem of information, his own family history, has been preserved and cared for by others.

We at the Research Center continue to collect and preserve any and all family and local history material possible. Some we copy and file for future researchers to rediscover.

Letter: Requires an effort from the community as a whole

Billy Joe Fudge writes:

I agree with Miss Rieder that there is a problem in our county that needs to be addressed. Although I am a staunch proponent of limited government interference into the affairs of law abiding citizens, I know the one all encompassing role of government is to do for the people what the people cannot do for themselves. Having said that, I would like to make a few points.

A few decades ago, our county was suffering from a different scourge; roadside dumping. We all know the negative environmental ramifications of roadside dumps, one of which is a continuing ignition point for wildfires. A. L. Sinclair, local Forest Ranger began cleaning up the dumps and seeding the areas, the county posted no dumping signs, community members reported new dumping, law enforcement including Ranger Sinclair investigated the new dumping and cited violators to court.

The point is that it takes an effort from the community as a whole, including government, to rectify problems such as the one this Animal Control Ordinance is seeking to solve. We don't need to make criminals out of animal lovers by establishing arbitrary rules such as limiting numbers of animals and making some animals legal to raise and others not. I think there are enough rules and laws on the books to curtail and control this problem. However, some rules, laws and penalties may need tweeking to make them more efficient and effective. The public needs to know that "ratting" on folks who may be violating the law or creating a situation not conducive to the public good is acceptable; much the same as reporting those perceived to be driving under the influence. The solution to this problem will be found in a determined, long-term, support and commitment from individuals, the community, governing bodies, law enforcement and the justice system.

Animal control - we need to find common ground

By Miss Donna Rieder

After reading about the proposed animal ordinance, and also reading responses posed by a few local residents (Joyce Coomer, Susan Smith, and Marie Freeman, whose questions I will address at the end of this post), I decided to attend last weeks' Fiscal Court meeting, and find out more. I didn't know that the animal control issue wasn't up for discussion at this meeting, but I was allowed to speak anyway. This is basically how my presentation went:

"My name is Donna Rieder, I live on White Oak Church Road, right around the corner from the Sam Coffey Hole. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Sam Coffey Hole, it's where my creek, Big Clifty Creek, feeds into Russell Creek, and has long been a favorite place for people to go to swim. It's now where people go to make drug deals, dump their old sofas, TVs and garbage, and also where they dump their unwanted animals.
