Who needs google when you have Jennell?

By Tiffany Stephens

Hi! My grandma recently purchased a laptop to "google" things. I wondered why, because she knows how to do everything. I mean, I call her if I need to know anything. So that made me giggle.

Come to find out, she mostly just gets on Columbia Magazine to see all the local news and obituaries. Numerous times a day. After Easter, she asked me to come look her laptop, showing me all the pictures everyone had posted, and kept saying, "See all these? How do I get Jesus on there?". I was so confused. Then she continued to point out her crocheted Jesus! (Told you she could do anything!)

Her name is Jennell Burton. She worked at the jewelry counter at K-Mart in Russell Springs for many many years, of course, until it closed. She absolutely loved meeting new people all the time, and I'm sure many remember her. If you don't, you're truly missing out.

She definitely keeps herself busy now, and wanted to share her work she had been doing! Maybe I'll learn to crochet one day soon, I sure won't have to google a "how to". Haha

Governor announces 2.5M vaccination challenge

When goal is met, capacity restrictions and physical distancing requirements for nearly all venues, events and businesses that cater to 1,000 or fewer patrons will be lifted

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the Team Kentucky Vaccination Challenge: When 2.5 million Kentuckians have received at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, the state will remove most capacity restrictions.

When the goal is met, the Governor said he will lift capacity restrictions and physical distancing requirements for nearly all venues, events and businesses that cater to 1,000 or fewer patrons. In addition, he will end the curfew for bars and restaurants.

"The question is, how quickly can we get there? With the vaccine supply we have, we could get there in as little as three-and-a-half weeks from now. That minimum time frame might not be realistic, but we should get there in four to six weeks if we are intentional," said Gov. Beshear. "We have to try everything to reach this point as quickly as possible. That will help us have a more normal summer than any of us could have imagined this winter."

April 11-17 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

By Critley King-Smith

Frankfort, KY - In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, Gov. Andy Beshear and the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) are recognizing dispatchers who daily answer the call to provide assistance and assurance to citizens of the commonwealth.

"Often called the 'heroes behind the headsets,' Kentucky telecommunicators provide a lifeline to both citizens in need and law enforcement officers in the field," said Gov. Behsesar. "They serve as an unseen, but vital link in keeping law enforcement officers and Kentuckians safe at all times, day or night."

The Governor thanked the commonwealth's dispatchers during a video message, which can be found here: https://vimeo.com/535844322/d3854f9004.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week was established in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office in California. Each year, the second week of April is set aside to acknowledge those serving as telecommunicators across the country.

History Monday: Trees cut where the courthouse now stands

By Mike Watson

An Interesting Old Story--The following story was told to Mr. A.J. Stotts by Mr. Butler Wheeler, July 25, 1890. It is doubtless correct:
"My father, Archibald Wheeler, cut two trees, a black oak and a poplar where the courthouse in Columbia now stands. They were the first trees cut in Adair County*, and out of one of them he caught seven 'coons. The same night his dogs treed a bear on Pettit's Fork, which was shot and killed by old man Billy Hurt." He further stated, "my father died in 1864 at the advanced age of 98 years. At the time of his death he was the oldest Mason in Adair County."

*There had been trees cut in Adair County prior to this to build cabins and stations, but perhaps these were the first cut upon what is now known as the Public Square of Columbia, and the site of the county's proposed new courthouse.
This Interesting Old Story appeared in the Adair County News, issue of 13 April 1921, page 5.

Gower leads CU Quality Enhancement Plan

By Scarlett Birge, student news writer
Office of University Communications

Campbellsville, KY - "Diversity and inclusion have a role in what we engage with in our reading," said Dr. Nathan Gower, associate professor of English, during Campbellsville University's recent Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) over Zoom.

"I'm not sure that we can say it's morally imperative that you read inclusively," he said. "But I think it is safe to say that in certain contexts it's ethically the right thing to do."

Creative literature forces people to consider other perspectives, he said. When reading works from marginalized groups, the audience is forced to reckon with the unique individual identity being presented.
