Schools in Adair will all be virtual Monday, 1 Mar

Adair County School District students, faculty and staff received a call from Superintendent Pamela Stephens at 8:20pmCT Sunday evening addressing a change of plans for Monday, March 1, 2021 in light of the day's flooding.

Dr. Stephens said, "Mother Nature is really throwing it on right now (continuing heavy downpour and storms) so for tomorrow, Monday, we will be all NTI, no in person classes. As many places on the roads are under water, we don't know what morning will bring. So for safety we are saying all virtual for all students.

She also said, "Looking ahead, we have made the decision to offer four days a week in person school for all wishing to attend starting March 22, 2021. We are excited. Notify your school as soon as possible if you want to attend in person. Thank you and God Bless."

February 2021 - well I never

2021-02-28 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
My Grandmother Addie would have said, "Well I never." That's what I'm thinking about this month of February, 2021. We have been on a roller coaster of weather events from moderate cold dropping to let-the-faucets-drip all night freezing, from ice storm to having the ice layer completely covered over in a snow storm. Afterward, we moved into sunshine and temperatures soaring to turn-off-all-the-heat mid 60s.

At least the snow was gone, back to normal Kentucky February winter, right? Wrong, tonight, as we prepare to leave the month behind, we are experiencing thunder, lightening, winds and a full day of torrential rains causing a night of flooding as if it were April. So if Addie was sitting here in her green rocker, lights flickering, thunder rumbling and rain hitting the metal porch roof like bullets, we'd nod to each other and say in unison, "Well I never."

Letter: Agree with Billy Joe on the bypass issue

Harry Furkins writes:
Agree with Billy Joe on the bypass issue for Columbia. Even though the square has been widened since I was going through there, it's still a tight squeeze since trucks are longer than before. Sometimes you have to put blame where it belongs. As it was an Amazon truck chances are it was an inexperienced driver. Sometimes drivers will not abide by the bridge law, which is the distance between the tractor tandem and the rear tandem on the trailor, which gives a smoother ride. The span can be shortened the same way. That is the lesson on trucking for today.

Homeplace on Green River 2020 Review

"we took stock of where we had been, where we were, and where we were hoping to go and then, we charged forward."

By Billy Joe Fudge

There is a slogan, "hurry up and wait" which is often humorously applied to military operations where young men and women are roused from a deep sleep, hurriedly dressed and shod, rushed out of doors to only stand for extended periods of time in a cold, wind-driven rain. That my friends and neighbors is the year Twenty-twenty.

During January and February, we at Homeplace were eagerly planning for our greatest Plow Day Spring Festival ever but then in late March we saw the Covid handwriting on the wall and decided to "hurry up and wait" till this demon passed us by. Well, it went by much more slowly than we ever imagined and before you know it, the Fall Heritage Festival met the same fate as Plow Day. However and although it seems as if we spent much of last year standing out in "a cold, wind-driven rain", in reality, we took stock of where we had been, where we were, and where we were hoping to go and then, we charged forward.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 2/27/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added 409 new cases this week compared to 371 last week. With the blizzard last week, there was not much COVID-19 testing compared to this week, so next week will give us a better picture of if our cases are actually going up, or continuing trend downwardly. We have 366 active cases today compared to 410 last Saturday. We experienced 3 deaths this week. We have 34 cases hospitalized today compared to 28 last Saturday.

Our district-wide 7-day average incidence rate today is 27.9 new cases per day compared to 25.3 last week. However, we do have 5 counties in the "orange-critical" range of community-spread: Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Pulaski, and Wayne; and 5 counties in the "red-critical" range of community-spread: Adair, Green, McCreary, Russell, and Taylor.

Please, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 5.56%.
