Phillip Coffey - Warp Speed Replacing

By Phillip Coffey
Snow removal -nice Mohawk on our motorized vehicle.
Still plenty of Winter along atop of the many branches.
Billie and I walking in awe through the scenic valley.
Capturing the moments of nature's tugged enhancing.

Riding old car hoods, tin metal or whatever was handy
In days of our youth-much certainly not ever telling
But store bought borrowed sled destroyed by our mishandling.
Cousins and myself led by our Father(s) - warp speed replacing.

Regional vaccination sites to open Phase 1C appointments Mar 1

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced COVID-19 cases have declined for six straight weeks in the commonwealth. He also reported the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases since Oct. 5.

"The trends are going in a positive direction, perhaps the most positive since the pandemic began," said Gov. Beshear. "What that means is that we're doing a good job. Do I think that vaccines are starting to have an impact? Certainly in the long-term care community. Hopefully we'll see more of it in the overall state. But we're seeing more people wearing masks, engaging in social distancing, thinking about the number of contacts they have in their day, and it is working."

The Governor announced that regional vaccination sites will open to Kentuckians in Phase 1C beginning March 1, and he expects other vaccination sites to move into Phase 1C around the same time.

Gov. Beshear encouraged all vaccine sites to continue prioritizing Phase 1A and 1B individuals, even as 1C appointments are made as well. He asked all providers to continue outreach to vulnerable Kentuckians who may have a harder time navigating the vaccine sign-up system.

More than 583,000 Kentuckians have received at least their first dose of the vaccine.

By Jennifer Carter

Columbia/Adair Utilities District bills due in March will be out late due to the inclement weather conditions we have been experiencing. We are working on finalizing the bills and plan to have them out by the end of the month.

With this delay in bill mailing we will be extending the due date from March 10th to the 17th. This will give everyone an extra week to pay their bill without penalties.

Escobar seals overtime win in women's soccer season opener

By Kyle Jackson

Marietta, GA - The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team opened their 2020 season with a 2-1 overtime victory on the road over Life (GA) Sunday afternoon.

Eager to get their season underway after having to wait an additional two weeks, the Blue Raiders came out into the first half excited, ready to find the first goal of the season. Yudaya Nakayenze was a menace in the Life defense recording five shots, two of which were on target. The offense was so eager to create but forgot they must stay onside to do so, having six attacking moves called off by the offside rule, three of which came in the last minute of the half. Lindsey Wilson ended the game with 19 offside calls against them, the most in a single match.

While the Life defense was busy trying to contain the boisterous Lindsey Wilson offense, it was the Life goalkeeper, Emily Hounsell who was the busiest in the first half, coming up big on four occasions to keep the score level. The teams would enter halftime in a 0-0 deadlock.

History Monday: Law and Disorder, 1870s Style

By Mike Watson

Law and Order, or Disorder has been a fact of life almost since two people of differing ideas occupied the same territorial space. The consumption of alcohol in its many forms has existed since the earliest of times and has been regulated in one way or other for much of that time as well.

The United States, under the new Constitution of 1787, saw regulation of whiskey through a tax that was objected to and fought by the citizens of Pennsylvania in the early 1790s. The entire nation watched, as the outcome would effect every citizen in the industry in the nation, including Kentucky.

Regulation in our state and area was spotty at best for much of the history leading up to the post-Civil War era. Moonshiners were everywhere, doing what many citizens considered a reasonable and personal business. They did not care to become bonded by the government, nor pay the taxes. The federal authorities thought otherwise and sent revenue officers into the hills and hollers to ferret out these folk. They were occasionally caught, the stills and supplies destroyed, and the moonshiners hauled before the court. In time this meant for our region the federal court in Louisville.

Newspapers often carried stories of the exploits of the 'shiners and those tasked to catch them. What follows are a few snips from the newspapers of the 1870s to this end. These are just select items and names have been obscured to protect those involved.
