Dust Tracks On A Road for Black History Month

By Linda Waggener

Favorite recent books include an audio book discovered through the Adair Public Library's Overdrive program, Dust Tracks On A Road, by Zora Neale Hurston. I'm recommending it for a special experience during Black History Month.

I laughed out loud at this from the author's autobiography:
"...In the first place I was a southerner and had the map of Dixie on my tongue... the way an average southern child is raised on simile and invective. They know how to call names. It is an everyday affair to hear somebody called a mullet headed, mule eared, wall eyed, hog nosed, gator faced, shad mouthed, screw necked, goat bellied, puzzle gutted, camel backed, butt sprung, battle hamed, knock kneed, razor legged, box ankled, shovel footed, unmated so and so..."
Dust Tracks on a Road is described as "Zora Neale Hurston’s candid, funny, bold, and poignant autobiography, an imaginative and exuberant account of her rise from childhood poverty in the rural South to a prominent place among the leading artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance.

Phillip Coffey - Valued Politician

VALUED POLITICIAN (Been too serious lately)
By Phillip Coffey

Sugar beets mixed with Pinto beans and Sweet 'taters'.
Dreams of joining the band in the Trombone section
Upwind- signed him up after just one observation.
People lined up just to see his signed application.

Marching band began touring in the Summer season
Downwind from the event onlookers retreated in droves
From the presence of the rookie marching band sensation.
Now the outcast band member has become a valued politician.

Kentucky Color: A Visual Mystery II

By Billy Joe Fudge

I've spent much of my time since 1972 assisting woodland owners in the management of their woodlands and when needed, marketing their standing timber resource to optimize their profits while practicing sustainable forestry.

In my journeys crisscrossing the woodlots of The Great Wooded South, I am always, it seems, in discovery mode. Since I do not work by the hour but the job, I have the opportunity to stop and ponder various anomalies as they present themselves and oftentimes, as with this one, these anomalies turn out to be natural and scientific mysteries.

Friday's "A Visual Mystery" is a wooded, man-made pond in Russell County. When it was constructed to contain what appeared to be pure, sandstone filtered spring water, it was at the edge of the hillside pasture. Since the pasture was not maintained over the past 20 to 30 years, the woodland took its natural course and reclaimed the pasture over those two or three decades.

I walked up onto the small dam and was immediately intrigued by what I thought to be large ice crystals forming on the surface of the water. While pondering the pond surface to, at the very least for my own satisfaction, explain the physics of the ice crystal formation on the surface of water, I noticed that when a breeze crossed over the pond, the surface was not disturbed at all. This curiosity led me to attempt to make a few waves by touching the water surface with my trusty walking stick and I was immediately taken aback by what I found!

Letter: Still possible to shed virus

Marie Freeman writes:
I think the reason to continue the mask wearing and social distancing even after vaccination is because they aren't sure you can't still be infected and asymptomatic shedding the virus. I don't believe the vaccine guarantees you will not get the virus but helps guarantee it will not be as deadly if you do get it. This is a totally new virus. It's going to take a long time to establish herd immunity, even with the vaccine.

I guess there's one big plus to the social distancing mask wearing. There's been very few flu cases, and other viruses spreading. If we want to slow the variants down we have to get a grip on this virus. The more it spreads the more variants we're going to have. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-19-vaccine-infectious.

Just curious... How do these folks know they have oil on their land? I'm right down the road...
Johnny thanks for writing. This sort of science is above our pay grade, but hopefully some CM readers can chime in with more information.
