LWC Women's Basketball falls 77-58 at Shawnee State

By Kyle Jackson

Portsmouth, OH - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team's eight-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt tonight with a 77-58 loss to No. 9-ranked Shawnee State (OH) at Waller Gymnasium.

The 17th-ranked Blue Raiders struggled offensively throughout the game shooting only 30 percent (20-of-66) from the floor. But it was a 10-minute cold spell that ultimately doomed Lindsey Wilson's hopes for the road upset.

LCDHD: Adair Schools staff vaccinations underway

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/21/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Lake Cumberland District's health departments are not pre-registering for future vaccination phases currently, as we have not been authorized to order additional first dose vaccines, nor have we been promised that we will be allowed to do so in the future.

The only prime/1st dose vaccines coming into the Lake Cumberland area at present are the 500 doses per week that are coming to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Also, select area providers (not the health departments) are receiving COVID-19 vaccine for the Adair, Casey, and Clinton County school staff this week. The week of January 25th we expect area providers will receive vaccine for school staff in Cumberland, Green, Russell, and Wayne, along with part of the school staff in Pulaski. The week of February 1st, we expect area providers will receive vaccine for the school staff in McCreary and the remainder of Pulaski. The push to vaccinate school staff will likely tie up most of the state's vaccine supply during these weeks.

The school clinic in Casey was provided on 1/20/21 and 150 doses were provided by Cumberland Family Medical. The Adair County Superintendent reports a very good day of vaccinating school staff today in partnership with Cumberland Family Medical. While the final numbers are not in, we anticipate around 200 doses will be given.

Gov. Beshear provides update on COVID-19

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the state's highest-ever number of newly reported deaths, while also noting that the state's positivity rate decreased.

"We still have too many cases, but it does appear we are seeing a decline from our highest week ever. Our positivity rate is down again. Far higher than we want, but this is a good trend," said Gov. Beshear. "The hard part though about today's report is it's the most deaths we ever announced."

BRDHD opens waiting list for vaccines

By Ashli McCarty, Kim Flora

The Barren River District Health Department (which covers Metcalfe County) is currently administering COVID-19 vaccine for individuals in Phase 1A and 1B. Our agency will have the capacity to add to our current waiting lists on Monday, January 25th with the understanding the waiting lists will contain more names than available vaccines. At this time, the waiting lists are only for individuals 70 years of age and older.

We have been informed by the Kentucky Department for Public Health that we will not receive any primer doses (first doses) for at least three to four weeks. Starting with the earliest registrant, we will work our way down the lists to schedule appointments based on available vaccine. To add your name to the waiting list, please visit http://redcap.link/brdhdvaccine. You can also find this link on our homepage at www.barrenriverhealth.org.

If you do not have internet access and do not have someone to assist you with the online process, please call the Barren River District Health Department at 270-781-8039 and press option 1.

Letter: Auto-correct error?

Jim G. writes:
Linda, I think the cutline for the Kentucky Literacy Map image (photo_id=90300) may have fallen victim of auto-correct. As I recall, the Wayne County author's surname is Arnow rather than "are no." lol. Some days, it surely is hard to love technology, isn't it?
Jim, you're exactly right as to how that happened, thanks very much for spotting it, and apologies to Ms. Arnow!

Letter: Google cannabis cancer

Marie Freeman writes:
I would think that would be enough to unite all of us to look at this plant...medicine. Cannabis kills cancer cells. I don't know anyone that's not had a friend or a relative suffer with cancer or die of cancer. And that's just one of many medical ailments proven this plant can help. In the last six years after I researched the discoveries for cannabis killing cancer cells, it's just undeniable. Israel, Canada , Australia, China, Germany, Spain. Everywhere but the USA! Just research... Israel and Spain cannabis research cancer. I guess it's fortunate we have these other countries researching it. A lot that I've discovered in the last six years on pub med.gov has been removed?

Subject: Seeking photos of Casey Jones Jewelry Store

Marilyn Boyd writes:
I am Casey's daughter. It seems like there have been a few articles about him and his jewelry store. I have some photos. Most are old ones. I will share.

But I am wondering if you know if any of his shop. The man that has the place now was wondering where that clock is or went. Mystery. I was 13 when we moved. It may have came with us but I don't remember it anywhere... but that I would have.

I just keep hoping someone accidentally has an old picture of the shop. I do have one of dad at his watch bench inside. Thank you.
Marilyn, thanks for writing. We're hoping some of our readers might have photos that they can share.

Kentucky launches free statewide internet speed test

Go to http://ewdc.ky.gov/Initiatives/Pages/KBI.aspx to participate.

By JT Henderson

Frankfort, KY - Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman announced today the launch of the Kentucky Broadband Speed Test, a crowd-sourcing project that will gather data from Kentuckians needed to expand internet home access for distance learning, telework and telehealth. Kentuckians can take the free, anonymous speed test from Jan. 19 to Feb. 18 at ewdc.ky.gov/Initiatives/Pages/KBI.aspx.

To participate, the device must be connected to your home Wi-Fi service and disconnected from a virtual private network (VPN) that may be connected to a workplace or school. For the most accurate results, ensure that no one else connected to your home internet is using a substantial portion of the internet bandwidth for activities such as streaming video or gaming during the test.

Individuals without Wi-Fi access in their home can visit their local library or other locations such as stores or restaurants that offer free internet access to submit the address of a home with no available service.

"We need as many Kentuckians as possible to take this internet speed test, to get an accurate picture of who has adequate internet access across the state," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "The more speed tests taken, the better understanding we will have of our state's internet capabilities, and the better prepared we will be to repair and expand it."

The outgoing, the incoming and marijuana

By Linda Waggener

On Inauguration Day 2021, I scanned coverage on various channels for the purpose of gathering perspectives from all sides, not just those I agreed with. It was on the public channel C-SPAN that I heard the most differing viewpoints.

In just a quarter hour, one caller hailed the democrat perspective, one defended the republican perspective, and one firmly believed the conspiracy theories defending the January attack on the United States Capitol.

Then a caller asked for civility - a simple return to civility among all viewpoints - and he said, "on unity, how in the world can the new president bring unity? I'll tell you how, he can federally legalize marijuana and that will bring unity."

That prompted me to look at our discussion on Columbia Magazine about the legislation pending, again, for the legalization of medical marijuana in the state of Kentucky. Some of the letters on this subject from readers follow:
