Governor: Vaccines in sight; fight harder than ever

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear encouraged Kentuckians to stay strong in the fight against COVID-19, as the commonwealth is just days away from beginning to administer life-saving vaccines.

"These vaccines are right around the corner. Within the next 10 days or so we might be giving out the first vaccines," said Gov. Beshear. "That means every loss of life and every extra infection that happens between now and then is entirely avoidable. So let's fight harder than we ever have and do our part as Team Kentucky."

Travel Advisory
The Kentucky Department for Public Health advises against travel to states with a positivity rate of 15% or higher. Those states currently include: Idaho (50.64%), Kansas (44.58%), South Dakota (44.09%), Iowa (42.24%), Oregon (40.18%), Alabama (34.72%), Pennsylvania (32.03%), Arizona (25.39%), Mississippi (24.91%), Utah (22.20%), Missouri (19.21%), Oklahoma (19.01%), Nevada (16.42%), Arkansas (16.17%), Ohio (15.49%) and Tennessee (15.34%).

Pharmacy Refills Update

Letter: Deeply rooted

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
And I might add that this fungi is not just growing on the bark of what looks to be an Oak tree; it is deeply rooted in and feeding upon dead and rotting heartwood. This means that given just a little time, gravity and wind, this heart rot will have its way with the tree. Judging from the picture and nature itself, this tree could be a clear and present danger, either now or in the near future, to people or property should it be in the vicinity of either or both.
Comments re: Letter: Mushroom looks like Pleurotus pulmonarius

Billy Joe is right, and there were quite a few more of these mushrooms growing up and down the tree in question. Luckily, it's located away from structures or trails in one of the local parks. --Pen

Letter: Mushroom looks like Pleurotus pulmonarius

Marie Freeman writes:
As always with one fungus it is an assumption! "Pleurotus pulmonarius, commonly known as the Indian Oyster, Italian Oyster, Phoenix Mushroom, or the Lung Oyster, is a mushroom very similar to Pleurotus ostreatus, the pearl oyster, but with a few noticeable differences. The caps of pulmonarius are much paler and smaller than ostreatus and develops more of a stem. P. pulmonarius also prefers warmer weather than ostreatus and will appear later in the summer. Otherwise, the taste and cultivation of the two species is generally described as largely the same. In North America, P. pulmonarius also closely resembles Pleurotus populinus, which is restricted to growing on aspen and cottonwood." --https://fungusid.com

Letter: Mushroom identification

James Roberts writes:
I think that these are called oyster mushrooms. Some people call them shelf mushrooms also. That can damage trees by destroying the heart of the tree causing it to die from the inside out. They usually grow where the tree has been damaged sometime in the past. Hope this helps. --James
