Phillip Coffey - Tobacco Stick

By Phillip Coffey

Sam Shepard, actor and songwriter with Bob Dylan was a long time friend of my Brother, Roy. Sam suffered for years with "Lou Gehrig Disease".

He succumbed to that dreaded malady a few years ago. Roy was driving around Sam on his farm a few years ago; he grabbed one of Sam's tobacco sticks and brought it to me.

Now the tobacco stick is leaning near the Northeast corner of my 'study'. Don't know why I call it that peculiar name.

Governor updates on vaccine allocations

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that Kentucky has surpassed 2,000 COVID-19 deaths and the positivity rate is now higher than 10%.

He also updated Kentuckians on the distribution plan for the commonwealth's initial COVID-19 vaccine shipments. Long-term care residents and staff, as well as health care professionals, will be inoculated first.

"Today, we passed some tough milestones both in the country and here in Kentucky. Today is the toughest day our country has ever seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, as we lost more people than any other day this year. We're also at record hospitalizations across America," said Gov. Beshear. "This ought to show us and tell us that now, more than ever, we need to do the right things to protect those around us."

In total, Kentucky is expected to receive 38,025 COVID-19 vaccine doses in the first round of shipments from the federal government. These doses are all for the initial vaccine; booster shots will be delivered approximately three weeks later. Both Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines require an initial dose and a booster dose.

The Governor emphasized that the state's total doses and the plan for where those will be distributed are subject to change.

By Chris Taylor, Chief
Campbellsville Fire-Rescue

On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Campbellsville Fire Rescue was dispatched to a report of a working commercial fire at WHI Wholesale Hardwood Interiors, 1030 Campbellsville Bypass.

During initial dispatch, command requested a 2nd alarm and mutual aid response from Columbia and Greensburg Fire Departments. Upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming out all four sides of the 120,000 square foot facility. Firefighters provided an aggressive interior attack on the fire. All workers were accounted for and safetly evacuated.

Once fire conditions drastically increased, firefighters switched to an exterior operation for firefighter safety. Additional mutual aid response was requested for ladder truck, tanker and manpower support. Once fire conditions slightly improved, exterior and interior operations worked simultaneously. Firefighters have remained on scene since the initial alarm, and are expected to be at the scene the rest of today. The unreachable areas of the fire is expected to burn over the next 48 hours.

Carol Perkins: Decorating for Christmas

Previous column: A visit to Carol's Kitchen

By Carol Perkins

When the snow fell Monday, I decided to decorate. My first thought was "why bother" since no one will be visiting, but I wanted to decorate for two reasons: it's a Christmas tradition and Guy and I appreciate the results.

Last summer when I was cleaning the basement, I vowed to declutter the Christmas storage room and donate. So, as Guy moved items upstairs, I went through what was left. First, Guy brought up the main tree, meticulously stored in its box, along with the stand and the star. We decorated it and quit for the day. The next day, I spotted two small outdoor trees in decorative containers once used outside. As I looked for the missing top to the second tree, I said, "Surely, in all this mess I can find that treetop." While sorting through boxes, I found it with the garland. Now we have two small trees on the sides of the front doors.

"We're not putting these ugly wreaths outside this year," Guy declared as he held them for me to examine. Those were ancient, mashed, and hadn't been used in a decade. I was shopping when he put them on the door last year, and I didn't want to tell him the truth.

Donate to long-term care residents through Dec. 9

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - Give a little extra cheer this year by donating Christmas and other seasonal gifts for residents in Kentucky's nursing, personal care and family care homes. COVID-19 has brought visitor limitations to long-term care settings as the 35,000 Kentuckians who reside in them are among the most vulnerable populations during a public health emergency. These residents consist of our retired teachers, neighbors, veterans, mechanics, bakery owners and people we have known and depended upon for most of our lives.

"You can make a difference in someone's life with a small gift and a message that they are loved and valued," said Sherry Culp with Kentucky Long-Term Care Ombudsman.

The Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency's (NHOA) 12th Annual Silver Bells gift drive is collecting items through Dec. 9. "Items on a Silver Bells wish list are things we often take for granted - soft cuddly blankets, snacks, candy, lip balm, socks, puzzle books, pens, stationery and stamps," said Culp.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 12/2/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

It has been a challenging day. We have had meetings with area hospitals, nursing homes, and EMS services. Many are becoming overwhelmed and are having staffing and supply issues. So please, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

Active (Current) Cases: We added 150 more cases today than we released historic cases. Taking all things into account, this leaves us with 1159 active cases in our district across all 10 of our district's 10 counties. On 12/02/2020 we were at our peak number of active cases, 1159.
