City Hall arrangements for payments and other business

Effective Monday, November 23, 2020
From Mayor Pamela Hoots

Attention all City Hall customers: Due to the fact that our community continues to see a great influx in Covid-19 cases, we will have all doors to City Hall closed to incoming traffic. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however, we feel we must do this to protect those that are most vulnerable as well as keeping our staff as safe as possible.

The city currently offers alternative options for all bill payments to the city. Online bill pay for utility payments and property taxes is available as well as over the phone and the night deposit located at the rear of the building. This box is checked daily. We do ask that you put your form of payment in a sealed envelope with something identifying what the payment is for. (i.e. Account number, Bill Number, or Account Holder's name.)

For anyone wishing to turn on service through the City of Columbia Gas Department, you may call and set up a time to do so. This also applies to any zoning paperwork or other fees you made need to submit.

Should you need to pick up an accident report, please call 270-384-4119 and someone will assist you in getting the report and leaving in outside box for pickup.

The staff at City Hall will continue to work at the capacity currently mandated by the Governor's office. There will still be staff here in the office, however we do ask that you call 270-384-2501 should you be outside and need assistance. All other city related departments are working as well and will continue to provide all usual services.

None of us prefer to operate this way, however we do feel that it is in the best interest of everyone. Thank you.

Gov. Beshear reports highest week ever for COVID-19 cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced 2,194 new cases and said today's COVID-19 case report is the highest ever for a Sunday. The second highest Sunday was Oct. 25, when the Governor reported 1,462 new cases, 732 fewer than he announced today.

In addition, this was Kentucky's highest week ever for new COVID-19 cases, surpassing the previous record week by 3,766 cases.

"This upcoming holiday week is a special time for all of our families, and I know everyone wants to have a normal Thanksgiving after such a difficult year," said Gov. Beshear. "I wish more than anything that we could go back to normal safely, but we can't. In order to protect our only line of health care workers and all of our fellow Kentuckians, keep gatherings small (eight people or fewer and two households at most), wear a mask, wash your hands and stay six feet apart.

"If we have a major surge of COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving, our hospitals will simply not have the capacity to give everyone the care they need. Nothing is worth that risk."

Turkey raising was once Big Business in Adair

By Mike Watson

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and for many it will be 'turkey day' once more. Some enjoy the big bird when the notion strikes, others only on the traditional holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Few turkeys are raised in Adair County today, but there was a time when it was big business. Many farm wives made extra money in the fall and winter by selling their prize birds, as the following bits from the Adair County News, 1910-1924, illustrate. So, enjoy your feast!

Thanksgiving menu at Hancock Hotel: Roast beef, grape jelly, apple sauce, cream potatoes, turkey, cranberries, celery, chipped potatoes, scalloped oysters, chicken and nut salad, corn bread, biscuits, light bread, butter, tea, coffee, milk, black cake, marble cake, tuti-fruiti cake, custard. 30 November 1910.

Turkey Hunt: It was learned that there was a large number of wild turkeys near here and so last Thursday some fifteen or twenty men banded together and armed themselves with guns of all calibres and made for the woods. They walked in all some miles over hills and hollows and actually saw some thirty-five or forty turkeys. F.E. Webb and Miller Stotts succeeded in getting one shot each at the game, but no turkey was killed or even wounded. Dirigo letter, 6 December 1911.

Baptist Bazaar: The Ladies of the Baptist Church have been hard at work for several months getting ready for the Bazaar which will be open to the public on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Before you get your grocery bill filled for Thanksgiving dinner, visit our grocery counter on which you will find dressed turkeys, fresh butter and eggs, cakes and pies. 26 November 1913.

Norman speaks on brokenness and serving others

By Scarlett Birge

Campbellsville, KY - "Since our world is full of brokenness, we rest in Jesus and serve others in his name," Dr. Dewayne Norman, senior pastor of Campbellsville Baptist Church, said at Campbellsville University's chapel service Nov. 11.

He read from Matthew 9:35-38 that says Jesus gives a blueprint showing how to serve others in a broken world.

"You need to be willing to go where Jesus was willing to go," he said of serving others and getting through brokenness.

KSP: Buckle Up during Thanksgiving travel

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally one of the heaviest traveled holidays across the country. Kentucky State Police (KSP) announced today that they will step up patrols as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 'Click It or Ticket' Thanksgiving enforcement initiative. These efforts will target seat belt usage with an added focus on impaired driving and commercial vehicle safety.

"We want all Kentuckians to be safe this Thanksgiving, not only from COVID-19, but on our roads as well," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Please limit travel this year in general, but if you are driving, buckle up and watch your speed. I appreciate all of our law enforcement officers who may spend this holiday away from their own families in order to keep other Kentuckians safe."

KSP Spokesman Sergeant Billy Gregory says the agency will utilize federal overtime funds to increase the number of troopers and officers on roadways.

LCDHD: 1,204 new cases in district this week

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 11/21/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

It's been our most challenging week since the onset of the outbreak -- our most challenging week by far. At both the state and local level, record numbers of new cases were added.

Last week Lake Cumberland added 886 new cases, this week, 1,204. Last Saturday, we had 981 active cases, today, 1,102. Last week we had 40 hospitalized cases on Saturday, today 54 (which ties for our most hospitalizations at any given time). We also experienced 11 deaths this week. Finally, all 10 of our district's 10 counties remain solidly in the "red-critical" range of community-spread.

At our present growth-rate, our total cases will double in 26 days. Imagine all the death and hospitalizations we've had up until this point potentially doubling in just 26 days. Imagine all the pain and suffering we've endured since March repeating itself, not in 8 and half months, but in 28 days.

We continue to call upon all of our community leaders and citizens to face this challenge with the upmost seriousness before our medical infrastructures are compromised. There is hope! It is within our power to impact the spread of COVID-19. Please, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

Governor: New steps can halt exponential growth of COVID-19

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Saturday said the state reported its second highest number of coronavirus cases and urged Kentuckians to adhere to the latest round of restrictions to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

"Today is our second highest day, just behind yesterday, with 3,711 new cases," said Gov. Beshear. "We continue to be in exponential growth, which will threaten the health care capacity in this state. That's why we're taking action and that's why we're fighting back."

The Governor said the new restrictions are necessary to fight the exponential growth of the virus and voiced concern of reaching a point where there aren't enough doctors and nurses to help those who are sick and who need their help.

"I know these steps are hard, but I want to thank the vast majority of individuals and businesses out there - many that are hurt the most by these steps we're taking - that are stepping up, agreeing and doing it right, knowing that the future of so many lives depends on it," added the Governor. "And there's a light at the end of the tunnel, with two effective vaccines. We've just got to get there. Let's make sure that we work hard to protect one another, make sure our most vulnerable are there to get the vaccine. So mask up, follow these steps we're taking the next three weeks and let's stop this growth of the coronavirus."

LWC Men's Basketball beats Bethel 95-70

By Chris Wells

A trio of Blue Raiders posted double-digits as Lindsey Wilson men's basketball beat Mid-South Conference newcomer Bethel (Tenn.) 95-70 today at Biggers Sports Center.

Elijah Jordan posted a game-high 20 points while Josh Smith and Payton Cundiff added 19 and 18 points, respectively to help the Blue Raiders improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MSC.

The Blue Raiders used a 10-2 run over the final three-plus minutes of the first half to build a 45-32 lead heading into the locker room. Lindsey Wilson -- who has lost twice this season when leading at the break -- validated the lead with its best half of the season in the second frame to run away from the Wildcats (1-1, 0-1 in the MSC).

Change to all live-streaming at Saloma Baptist Church

By John Chowning, Pastor
Saloma Baptist Church

Effective Sunday, November 22, 2020, we are changing to all live streaming (no in-person worship for a few weeks) of our 11amET Sunday morning Worship Service at Saloma Baptist Church.

You will be able to join us for worship by Facebook Live streaming at 11amET on Sundays for a few weeks due to the widespread surge in the COVID-19 pandemic. I will bring the Sunday worship service from our sanctuary, and the service will include the same worship elements as we have had on our streamed services since June - welcome, announcements, prayer, special music, scripture reading, sermon, etc.

This decision has been made in consultation with our deacons, trustees, leadership of our safety and security team, and others. We feel this is the best decision for the next few decisions with the rapid spread of the coronavirus. It is fine in prayer and in concern for the health and safety of the members, families, and friends of Saloma Baptist Church and the larger community.
