These are leftover toys of four boys as they grew up over the last 40 years - should they stay or should they go? Granddaughters think they should go and say space is really needed for their dolls.

I have contacted WKU, but I really need help finding a descendant of Ed Diddle. His son has passed, but I do not know if there are grandchildren are the like. Again, my number is 270-282-3175 if someone could help. Thanks.

Governor: Dangerous rise in cases requires urgent action

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear warned Kentuckians that at this time we face significant danger from COVID-19. Eighty counties are in the red zone as cases, hospitalizations and deaths increase rapidly. Monday's positivity rate was the highest since May 5.

"If you're not wearing a mask, you're putting yourself at a real risk for contracting COVID," said Gov. Beshear. "This is happening everywhere, which means we can't bring in health care workers from other places. If everywhere is surging, we're going to end up on our own. That means if we get overrun and we don't have enough staff in hospitals, it's our friends, our neighbors, maybe even our family members who won't get the treatment they need."

Community leaders, schools, businesses and families in red zone counties should follow reduction recommendations (PDF) (school-specific recommendations here: cv19ModeofInstructionMetricsforK-12Education (PDF).

"We are clearly at the worst place we have been for this disease," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health. "It took us almost 15 weeks from the start of this pandemic in Kentucky just to get to the number of cases we had last week alone."

Letter: Montpelier house has rich history

Tamara L Andrew writes:
Linda, this old house belonged to my husbands family on his mother's side and now to him. It was used during the civil war to house slaves and is separated into two halves upstairs with one entrance being in the front door and the other entrance being in the back door. You could not access each half from upstairs. You had to walk past the downstairs bedrooms to get to the stairs either way. The women were kept in one half and the men in the other half. There was a secret room upstairs also to hide them if need be.

Granny's been gone for 10 years now and the old house is falling apart but still a really cool place to me. --Tamara

Students called to explore Kentucky's mighty oaks

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - Students of all ages can explore Kentucky's mighty oaks through this year's Jim Claypool Art and Conservation Writing contests.

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, in cooperation with the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts and the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation sponsor the annual contest and provide materials that can be used in classrooms or at home to help students learn about the year's topic. Articles, suggested projects, fun facts and trivia have been provided to help students understand the importance and benefits of trees, and the impact oak trees in particular have on Kentucky's economy, environment and forest health.

"All Kentuckians benefit when our natural environment is preserved and thriving," said Gov. Beshear. "By teaching our kids the importance of protecting trees and planting new ones, we set them up for a safer, healthier future."

The art contest for students in grades one through five, and a writing contest for students in grades six through 12, allow students to use the knowledge they have gained about the topic and transform it into creative artwork and written essays.
