Gov. Beshear: Red zone communities must work together

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear said communities in red zone counties must work together to defeat an alarming spike in COVID-19. Today, the Governor reported Kentucky's highest COVID-19 test positivity rate since June 1 and its third highest number of new daily cases.

"These numbers are truly frightening. I know we've been in this fight for so long that it's easy to get numb to the scary headlines and high case numbers," said Gov. Beshear. "That's normal. It's human nature. But you have to understand this is the most dangerous COVID-19 has ever been in the commonwealth and it is leading to more of our fellow Kentuckians becoming sick, being hospitalized and dying. We can only get back to normal if we address it head on and that is why I am urging all of you, especially those in red counties, to follow recommendations for reducing the spread in your community."

Gov. Beshear reminded community leaders, schools, businesses and residents in the state's hardest hit areas to follow the Red Zone Reduction Recommendations. Thursday's 80 red zone counties should follow the recommendations Monday, Nov. 9, through Sunday, Nov. 15.

Letter: Azaleas that bloom multiple times per year

Marie Freeman writes:
Azaleas that will bloom two to three times a year during the warm season; spring, summer and fall. I was curious so I did a search it seems that there is a hybrid that will bloom three times a year ....

Imagine if you could capture the fleeting spring production of one of the South's most talented troupers--the azalea--and then stage a command performance again amid the gilded backdrop of late summer and early fall. Gardeners already familiar with Encore azaleas know this scenario is possible. This relatively new group of azaleas was developed in the 1980s by crossing traditional spring-blooming plants with a rare Taiwanese summer-blooming azalea, Rhododendron oldhamii. The offspring boast blooms in springtime and then an encore in late summer and fall. Although Encore azaleas don't offer a profusion of flowers like the common spring bloomers, they make up for it with a much longer blooming period.

What's amazing is the duration of the total flowering period," says Jim Berry, general manager of Plant Development Services, Inc. (PDSI), in Loxley, Alabama. "We've had reports of nine months of flowering in the Coastal South," he says. PDSI owns the patent to propagate Encore azaleas, and they've been working overtime to keep up with the demand.

Update on Rep. Bam Carney after election

Dr. John Chowning shares word from Mark Carney about his brother, Rep. John 'Bam' Carney, who is in recovery after having been hospitalized with a severe case of pancreatitis and infection last December.

By Mark Carney

"...Today when I was with Bam he got to participate in the caucus conference call which was the first conference call for the 75 Republican State Representatives. It started at 4:00 and was to be just a short 15 minute call. We had to make it even shorter as the physical therapy team gathered outside the door around 4:10.

"David Osborne, the Speaker of the House was leading the call and Bam spoke up and said "Oz" this is Bam. Bam said I have to get off so I can do PT, but I just wanted to congratulate everyone on their races and thank you all for doing such a great job.
