Phillip Coffey: Never challenge a Sharp Shooter

By Phillip Coffey

Squirrel hunting first time with my Daddy
Shouldering a single shot “Stevens” .22 weapon
About to brandish my shooting skills to my Pappy
Quality time with Dad, never regretting

Way up in a Hickory tree there sits a critter
Me firing away, ‘surely gravity’s been revoked’
Dad taking weapon, small beast landing like a ‘flitter’
Be advised my sons, never challenge a ‘sharp shooter‘

(Written around thoughts of the upcoming November 11, 2020 Veterans Day as a tribute to my Dad, an infantryman in WWII.)

Governor waives alcohol fees to support service industry

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced 80 red zone counties, 12 more than were listed last week. He reminded Kentuckians that this is the most dangerous period of the pandemic so far: Today's new cases report is one of Kentucky's highest ever, second only to the day Gov. Beshear reported a significant backlog from Fayette County. Yesterday, the United States recorded more than 100,000 new daily cases, the first time any country in the world has done so.

"This means we just need more out of everybody," said Gov. Beshear. "It's got to be a concerted community effort everywhere this virus is out of control."

The Governor also announced new support for bars, restaurants and temporary venues to help them save costs as COVID-19 rages across the commonwealth, with indoor dining discouraged, and as the weather gets colder, limiting outdoor seating.

CU final enrollment for fall semester reaches over 13,500

By Ariel C. Emberton

Campbellsville, KY - Campbellsville University's fall 2020 enrollment is at 13,683. In the last five years, Campbellsville University has seen an increase in total enrollment across main campus by 202 percent, regional sites and centers by 784 percent and online by 114 percent.

"A modern-day 'miracle' might be the best way to describe the fall 2020 enrollment for Campbellsville University. To enroll 13,683 students in the midst of a global pandemic is far beyond what we anticipated," Dr. Shane Garrison, vice president of enrollment and professor of Theology said.

On main campus, several areas saw an increase from last year's enrollment numbers including returning undergraduate students, degree seeking undergraduate students and new graduate students.

Certificate areas, that saw an increase in enrollment in the last year, include cosmetology and barbering, allied health and welding.

Modern gun deer season opens Nov 14

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - The arrival of autumn brings beautiful fall colors, holiday excitement and for hunters, deer hunting in Kentucky.

About 300,000 Kentuckians hunt deer each year. The state's deer herd also draws thousands of hunters from other states throughout the different seasons, contributing heartily to the commonwealth's tourism industry.

Deer hunting greatly benefits Kentucky's economy - resulting in over $550 million in total economic benefit each year. Deer hunters annually spend more than $350 million in the Bluegrass state, sustaining more than 13,000 jobs and returning nearly $90 million in local, state and federal tax revenues.

KY Labor Cabinet: Make trenching safety a priority

By Kevin Kinnaird

Frankfort, KY - Seeking to raise awareness of trenching fatalities and accidents, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet is asking employers and excavation workers to make safety a priority on job sites.

Precautions must be taken to ensure trench workers have adequate protections in place to avoid cave-ins and other hazards, especially while excavation crews work in reduced daytime visibility and inclement weather during fall and winter months.

"Trenching is among the most hazardous of all construction jobs," Labor Cabinet Secretary Larry Roberts said. "Trench cave-ins pose serious risks, and result in serious injuries and fatalities."

Columbia Rotary Club seeks new members

By Ted Caldwell
Columbia KY Rotary International

This is a call to arms, bodies and souls! Citizens of Columbia and Adair County, I pray you will remember our past. Our combined dedication to God and country. We have fought with courage in all the wars with a large number of losses that have affected every family in the area.

Yet, we continue to give. At home we mobilized and sacrificed to provide for our sons and daughters no longer here to help with the work so required for our daily existence. Our churches flourished. Our civic organizations like Kiwanis, Rotary, and the Masonic Lodges grew in numbers and wealth. We used resources to build a better Columbia. Parks were built, the Rotary put in the community swimming pool, and there are more to come!

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 11/4/2020

There were 21 new cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in Adair County on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, and the ten-county area recorded the highest number in the District from the start.

By Amy Tomlinson

Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We are at our highest ever number of active cases at 689 and are still seeing very high numbers of new cases. On a bright note, Pulaski dropped back out of the "red-critical" range of community-spread. Therefore, eight of our district's ten counties are now in the "red-critical" range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Taylor, and Wayne. Pulaski, and Russell are in the "orange-accelerated" range.

It should be noted that, due to the recent surge in cases, and due to a medical absence of one of our key staff, we are behind entering a significant number of cases into the state system. While our local numbers are current (as reported in our news briefs, and on our webpages), the numbers reported by the Governor's Office and posted on the state's COVID-19 webpage will be significantly off. We have reported this through the State Department for Public Health to the Governor's Office. In any event, please utilize our local data for the time being.

Please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
