Letter: Delivered by Dr. Mercer

Alice Smith Robinson writes:
Hello, I really enjoyed the history lesson about Dr. Mercer. My Mom told me that she cut tobacco all day and that night Dr. Mercer delivered me at our home there in Adair County. That would be August 21, 1946. I moved to Indiana 50 years ago but I always love to come back home and visit family. Adair County will always be home. God Bless.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Look not touching

A sonnet for the birthday of Terri Powell Haight
When wildlife move across their native range
in places undisturbed by fencing curb,
then one may wonder if they notice change
and think we are the ones who them disturb.

When wildwoods still are growing here and there
exceptional respect for ancient ways,
then one may hope for future how and where
to keep the glory of our yesterdays.

When wildfires forest torching creep too near
with no regard for what destruction means,
then one may marvel at resolve austere
to brave the fearsome for the pleasant scenes.

When wildflowers are blooming, without fail
then look not touching, making no new trail.

- Robert Stone, 29 October 2020

Extension Service offers free hay testing

ByNick Roy
Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources

Forage quality drives cattle production. Good quality hay ensures cows produce adequate milk, young calves grow properly once the rumen is developed, and cows maintain adequate body condition to rebreed. Unfortunately, Kentucky weather often has other plans when we try to harvest hay in a timely fashion. Hay testing always allows us to accurately assess the quality of our hay and make supplement decisions accordingly so milk production, calf growth, and breeding are not sacrificed this winter.

All Adair County cattle producers and other livestock producers can take advantage of free hay testing services being offered by the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service. This program will be available as long as funds are available. Individuals will be limited to 5 free hay samples.

Hay samples should be collected using a hay probe that is available for farmers to borrow at the Extension office. If testing large bales, at least 10 bales should be probed to improve accuracy of the results. For small square bales, collect cores from 15-20 bales. Samples should be sealed in a Ziploc bag and labeled. Once results have returned from the lab, the results can be entered into a ration software program to determine supplementation needs for livestock during the winter or develop growing rations for young stock.

For more information, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at (270) 384-2317.

Letter: Cinnamon might discourage squirrels

Linda Byrd writes:
Hi Linda. We have experienced the same problem. Our little critters ended up being squirrels.

I cannot remember who told me this, but cinnamon, yes cinnamon! I purchased the McCormick brand, sprinkled it all around the porch and ground. I only had to sprinkle one time this summer. I'm not going to replace the boards until spring, to see if the same thing happens, but I was assured that it wouldn't!!! Good luck!!!

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 10/30/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Unfortunately, with our recent large spike in new cases comes increases in hospitalizations. We just broke our previous high (39) and presently have 41 of our positive COVID-19 patients in the hospital. We are also at our highest level of active cases at 585.

Finally, 8 of our ten counties are now in the "red-critical" range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne. The other 2 are in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread, McCreary, and Pulaski.

Friends, these are very alarming local numbers. Please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 75 today: Adair: 11; Casey: 14; Clinton: 4; Cumberland: 5; Green: 6; McCreary: 1; Pulaski: 8; Russell: 4; Taylor: 14; and, Wayne: 8. Our current new case growth rate is: 1.016. This means our total case count is projected to double every 44.49 days. The most new cases we ever added in a single day was on 10/28/2020 when we added 91 cases. Today's new cases include:

Sweet potatoes will star at final Farmers Market

Sweet potatoes will be among the fall crop stars at the final Farmers Market on the Square Saturday, October 31, 2020. They are a good source of fiber, complex carbohydrates and vitamins A and C.

Two varieties of sweet potatoes are grown in this region of Kentucky. The pale sweet potato has a light yellow skin and pale yellow flesh that is dry and crumbly. The darker variety has a dark skin and orange sweet flesh that cooks up moist. Choose small to medium-sized sweet potatoes with smooth, unbruised skin.
