ACJE: Annex cleaned, disinfected after COVID-19 exposure

Adair is now in the "red zone" due to an outbreak of 14 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and 7 new cases today.

By Gale B. Cowan

Adair County Judge Executive

I found out late this afternoon that the Adair County Annex Building has had a positive COVID-19 case within the building today. Most employees are NOT considered to be "close contact," but we did want to pass this along to our citizens.

We, as office holders and staff, have cleaned and disinfected (on top of what we do daily) this evening to try to make the building safe. If you are not comfortable coming into the building, please call the office you need to do business with, and they will happily make arrangements to assist you. We do have a company coming in over the weekend to do an even "deeper cleaning" than we are able to do ourselves, before voting begins next week.

If you need to pay your property taxes, please consider mailing them to Adair County Sheriff's Office, 424 Public Square, Suite 20, Columbia, KY 42728.

If you need to request an absentee ballot from the Clerk's Office, that can be done over the phone by calling 270-384-2801.

The safety of our staff and citizens is of the utmost importance. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff at 270-384-4703.

AGs ask DEA to consider illegal diversion of drugs

By Elizabeth Kuhn

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Daniel Cameron joined a multi-state coalition in sending regulatory comments to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) urging the agency to consider the illicit use of prescription opioids as the agency sets its drug quotas for next year.

In past years, the DEA established drug quotas based on the amount of pills pharmaceutical manufacturers expected to sell within a year. This approach did not account for the number of diverted pills. In the letter, the coalition writes that "when th[e] quota is set correctly, the goal is for the controlled substances that are diverted to illegitimate and unnecessary ends not to be produced in the first place."

The four-state coalition identified several ways DEA can improve its quota-setting policies and reduce the over manufacturing of prescription opioids, including more consideration of state data when setting quotas, working with individual states to develop information that is useful in calculating quotas, and adopting methods that can forecast demand for prescription drugs.

Why Adair is in the Red Zone for COVID spread

"Please take this seriously. You have a wonderful team at the local health department. Please heed their warnings! We must be safe, wear the mask, social distance, decrease contacts and wash hands."

By Dr. Marian Smith

To the Citizens of Adair County,

I love Columbia, Kentucky. I love Adair County! Though I have not lived in Adair County since I graduated from high school, my mom and family live in Adair County - it is a special place with special people!

Last evening, I came "home" to assist my mother with some things. She needed some grocery items, so I waited till about 7:00 PM to take her to Walmart. She was tired and decided not to go, so I headed down Hwy 206 alone.

When I arrived at the grocery store, I saw the signage related to the CDC guidelines (please wear a mask, please social distance, etc.). As I made my way down aisle after aisle (quickly), I was so afraid! People of all ages were NOT adhering to the posted, published guidelines! I walked faster and faster, grabbing only essential items. I could not get out of the store fast enough!

But, on the way out, I did speak with the two managers and commended them because EVERY employee was wearing a properly fitted mask. I expressed my concern for them and their colleagues.

Governor's Wednesday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"We cannot allow inconvenience to be a reason to take our eye off the ball and what we need to do for COVID. Doing the right thing is oftentimes hard," the Governor said. "We cannot go back to normal, not in the midst of this pandemic. We will get there, but we have to stay strong."

Case Information
Editor's note: Due to an upload of a significant backlog of case data from Lexington-Fayette County, the majority of today's cases are from weeks past. The actual number of new cases today without the backlog is 926.

As of 4 p.m. Oct. 6, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 76,587 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 2,398 of which were newly reported Wednesday. Three hundred and fifty-eight of the newly reported cases were from children ages 18 and younger, of which 38 were children ages 5 and under.

Despite Pandemic, LWC Achieves Record Enrollment for Fall 2020

By Venus Popplewell

Lindsey Wilson College announced a record enrollment for the academic year 2020-21. The announcement was delivered via a virtual town hall presentation from LWC President William T. Luckey Jr.

The milestone comes as national predictions suggested enrollments at colleges and universities would sharply decrease because of the uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I am stunned to announce that this fall, Lindsey Wilson College has the highest enrollment in her 117-year existence and we did that in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic," Luckey announced. "It is an incredible accomplishment and it also makes me wonder what might have been if COVID had not hit our campus and the rest of our country and the world."

Overall enrollment numbers climbed by 106 students with total enrollment surpassing 2,700 students for the first time in the history of the college. A significant driver in the overall success of the college was a record retention rate for returning students on the Columbia campus.

Poke Sallet and the Weed

Comments re: Signs of fall

By Mike Watson

Thank you for a great photo, Linda. I believe I know where and when that was snapped. Most of us grew up on poke greens. Yes, the plant as a whole is poisonous and must be prepared with care. I still cook up a 'mess' of poke sallet--or salet, depending on the source--once or twice a year, just from my back yard, using tender, new leaves, never the bigger ones near the base of the plant.

The roots are the most toxic part of the plant and we were always warned to choose leaves as far from the root as possible. My mother's family often fried the tender stems and ate as we now eat asparagus, again not too near the base.

There are people who pick the berries to mix with other berries and/or fruit for pies. I do not know anyone who has done this, but have been told by reliable sources that it can be done, when mixed--not as a stand-alone berry.

Or one may use the berries to make dyes, stains, and was and is often used with other ingredients for inks.

Incidentally, it is correctly "poke sallet" or "salet" which is the old term for cooked greens; salad is for uncooked greens, or so some culinary experts from the South will tell you.

Letter: Those are pokeweed

Marie Freeman writes:
I believe that's what they call pokeweed. The pokeweed plant (Phytolacca americana) has some of the juiciest and most appetizing looking berries of late summer and early fall. But don't be fooled by this alluring look. These berries are animal food, not people food. Migrating birds, deer, and many other animals can chow down on these poisonous berries with no ill effect.

Humans aren't so lucky. A handful could kill a child, and a little more could take out an adult. Pokeweed can be spotted easily by the grape-like clusters of purple-black berries and brightly colored, purplish-pink stalks up to 8 feet tall. Seriously, they look delicious, but don't eat them. --Marie
Comments re: Signs of fall

Marie sends a good reminder. Poke grows in abundance in Adair County, with volunteer plants shooting up especially anywhere the ground has been turned. The whole plant can be toxic to humans, from berries to leaves to roots.

However, the leaves can be harvested, especially early in the year, and then boiled, to make poke sallet. For safe practices, see wildabundance.net/pokeweed.

Johnny Giles had a thriving business harvesting poke in the 1970s and selling it in Cincinnati. You can read about it here: May 5, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener. Mr. Giles would pick bushels of poke from patches around Knifley each May, and then sell it up north for the modern equivalent of about $16 per bushel.
