Metcalfe Schools go to all at-home for this week

Metcalfe County schools have transitioned to all at home learning for this week, September 28 through October 2, 2020. A small group of staff members reported positive COVID-19 test results, so the district is taking this preventive measure out of an abundance of caution.

While district leaders believe this will affect a small number of people, administrators will contact, by phone, any student, staff, or community member who may be impacted. Because the decision affects the elementary school primarily, at this point, all middle school and high school athletic activities will continue as scheduled. Coaches will be in contact with their teams with any further instruction.

More details are available on the website at www.metcalfeschools.com.

Letter: King snakes prey on venomous snakes

Marie Freeman writes:
I understand people being afraid of snakes. However I think we need to be aware every time you kill a snake like that what you're doing to the ecosystem. Eastern king snakes tend to target smaller, more vicious snakes like copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes.

All of these snakes are venomous and can cause serious danger to people and pets, especially in wooded areas. Since eastern king snakes are actually natural predators to those smaller, more venomous snakes -- who are actually a threat to humans -- it is counterproductive to kill one.

We're all on the same team, and king snakes being around will help minimize our chances of being bitten by a copperhead or rattlesnake in the long run.

Governor's Monday update: 5k cases last week

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"What I hope really sinks in for everybody watching is the word 'urgency,'" the Governor said. "I believe that since maybe the traditional start of school, we have become more casual in our approach to COVID and our concerns about COVID, and how well we follow those rules and guidelines that are out there. It's been seven months and most of us have never had to deal with something like this for seven months. But the virus is here and it waits for us to get casual. When we get casual, what we see is alarming trends in the virus. We will get through this, but when we get to the other side, do you want to look back and think, 'We could have done better,' when doing better is about saving people's lives?"

As of 4 p.m. Sept. 28, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 66,939 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 456 of which were newly reported Monday. Eighty-three of the newly reported cases were from children ages 18 and younger, of which 20 were children ages 5 and under. The youngest was only 6 months old.

"Last week we had almost 5,000 cases in Kentucky - the most we have ever had. Now what we believe that we are seeing, I believe we're seeing it nationally, is the start of a new escalation," the Governor said. "As we come toward a fall season and winter, where more people are going to be inside and we know the virus spreads faster, we've got to do better than this. We can't be casual right now."

Gov. Beshear also stressed the continued importance of everyone wearing face coverings, calling it the single most important thing all of us can do to fight COVID-19.

KY DFI takes legal action against investment fraud scheme

By Laura Clewett

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) is taking legal action against a precious metals investment company accused of defrauding senior Kentuckians out of their retirement. Investors were tricked into cashing out their financial assets to invest in precious metals.

"Metals.com, an unregistered investment firm, allegedly solicited more than $185 million from seniors and other vulnerable investors nationwide, including more than $2.4 million in Kentucky, by promoting investment in precious metals at grossly inflated prices," said Marni Rock Gibson, Director of DFI's Securities Division.

The DFI legal action is a petition in partnership with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and 29 other states. The petition requests the Court order the defendants to cease sales activity, return money to investors, and stop defrauding investors and violating federal and state laws going forward.

Metals.com is also know by the names TMTE Inc., Chase Metals Inc., Chase Metals LLC, Barrick Capital Inc., Simon Batashvili, Lucas Asher, and Tower Equity LLC.

Wildfire Hazard Season begins October 1

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - Governor Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman urged caution as the fall wildfire hazard season in Kentucky begins October 1, bringing outdoor burning restrictions to the state.

"We have predictions of a worse than average fire season this year and I'm especially concerned with Kentuckians' health during this COVID-19 pandemic," said Gov. Beshear. "I urge every Kentuckian to be vigilant when outdoors and abide by burning restrictions. My heart goes out to our brothers and sisters on the west coast who are already facing these deadly fires, and I'm grateful to the courageous Kentuckians who have travelled across the country to aid the disaster response."

The Commonwealth's outdoor burning law (KRS149.400) prohibits burning between the hours of 6am and 6pm (prevailing local time) if the fire is within 150 feet of any woodland, brushland, or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials. These restrictions are in effect every fall (October 1 - December 15) and spring (February 15 - April 30) to help prevent wildfires.

Remembering Miss Winston

By Mike Watson

Thank you Vonnie Kolbenschlag for sharing the wonderful poem by Miss Noma Dix Winston. It has more meaning to me each time I read it, and as another has stated, when read aloud it seems to take on more dramatic prominence, more meaning.

In addition, I have thoroughly enjoyed all the stories and laudatory comments on Miss Winston, and her worthwhile contributions to American History and her guidance of many student minds, as well as her forays into the literary realm. I only regret I did not arrive on Lindsey Wilson Hill before her retirement. Thus, I missed her instruction in the classroom. However, I did receive her guidance in other ways through our interactions in several arenas for the remainder of her life here in Columbia.

Quarles urges farmers to apply for coronavirus relief funds

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles is encouraging Kentucky farm families facing market disruptions and associated costs because of the coronavirus pandemic to sign up for the second round of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), which opened on September 21, 2020, and will run through December 11, 2020.

Customers seeking one-on-one support with the CFAP 2 application process can call 877-508-8364 to speak directly with a USDA employee ready to offer assistance. This is a recommended first step before a producer engages with the team at a Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office.

Adair Co. Property Taxes bills to mail out Sept 30, 2020

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

We would like to remind everyone to consider mailing in your tax bill instead of in-person payment. This is a very busy time of the year for our office and this will help cut down on the amount of people we have in the lobby area due to Covid-19.

If you do choose to come in and pay, please wear a mask as it is required by the Adair County Fiscal Court for entry into the building.

Have your tax payment ready when you get here, this will cut down on time at window and move the line along faster. This will also reduce the number of people we have in the lobby standing.

We will be cleaning on a routine schedule throughout the day but once again we encourage the use of the mail for tax payments.

The following apply to your Adair County Tax Rate:
  • Paid between October 1 and November 1, 2020, you will receive a 2 percent discount.
  • Paid between November 2 and December 31, 2020, you will owe the face amount of bill.
  • Paid January 1, 2021 to January 31, 2021, a 5 percent penalty is added.
  • Paid February 1, 2021, to April 15, 2021, a 10 percent penalty is added in addition to a 10 percent add-on.

Kentucky Color: Dogwood Drupes Hanging Red

By Billy Joe Fudge
Shortened days and foggy morns
Announce Summer's end it's said,
But nothing signals Autumn near
Like Dogwood drupes hanging red.

September squirrels rain Hickory nuts
Down upon the hunter's head,
But nothing signals Autumn near
Like Dogwood drupes hanging red.

Smells from kitchens old and new
Mean apple pies and pumpkin bread,
But nothing signals Autumn near
Like Dogwood drupes hanging red.

We see the trees begin to change
And Poplar crowns soon to shed,
But nothing signals Autumn near,
Like Dogwood drupes, hanging red.
