Carol Perkins: Nature Talk

Previous Column: Day Trip to Nolin Lake

By Carol Perkins

When I reached for the water hose that was wrapped around a post next to the kitchen window, Ernie's grandson grazed close to my hand. I shrieked. I turned on the water, switched the nozzle to "jet" and was soon chasing Ernie Jr. up and down the brick wall.

The windows where Guy stood, watching me.

"Don't kill him!" he shouted as I zagged with his zig.

Ernie, Jr. was going to drown if I had my way, but he was faster than the power of the water. Once again, he escaped. Ernie, Jr. is a blue back lizard, grandson of our resident lizard whom Guy named Ernie. I have no love for either lizard and when I can, I terrorize them.

"They don't bother you," Guy protested. I secretly wished one would run up his pant legs and then we'd see who shrieked.

Carol warns of Social Security phone call scam

By Carol Salato Myers

WARNING!!! Please read this. I know it's lengthy. but you need to be aware. I received a call that I first missed, but returned. A man answered saying, "Social Security Administration."

He told me my SSN had been compromised, and he would have to invalidate it. He said something about a "legal enforcement action." I asked if this was a scam, and he assured me it was not.

He said, "You mean your police department hasn't contacted you?" I said they had not. I asked if I needed to contact them, and he said I should. He gave me his name, badge number and an ID Case Number.

He said he needed to ask questions to verify if I was who he was talking to. He then asked for my birth date.
