Kidnapped child home in Colorado; local law prevails Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross was pleased to announce that the kidnap victim is back home in Colorado where she will go through counseling. He asked for prayers for her and advised all parents to stay close to the contacts their children are making on the Internet. One week ago today on August 21, 2020, Columbia Police Department officers Jamie Cole and Jordan Dean, assisted by Adair Deputy Joey Keith, took on a challenge at the ends of their shifts, kept working, and helped save a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped in Colorado. In her home community, the Colorado Police worked from the victim's phone, found the last number she was communicating with and they turned out to be online predators. The officers obtained the proper paperwork to track the child from one cellular tower to another until they communicated their belief that she was in the Adair County area. Cumberland County Sheriff Scott Daniels worked with CPD officers. WKU to go test-optional for admission Bowling Green, KY - Beginning with the spring 2021 semester, WKU will no longer require standardized test scores, such as the ACT or SAT, for most applicants for admission. "WKU is excited to be among the first of Kentucky's public four-year universities to become test optional," Vice President for Enrollment and Student Experience Ethan Logan said. The University began considering the move to test optional last year, and in the process various internal constituencies endorsed the change. Logan said that a number of factors led to this decision. "Numerous national studies have indicated that a student's high school GPA is the better predictor of college success than performance on a standardized test." Adams/Beshear: Bipartisan Election Agreement OP-ED from Gov. Andy Beshear and Secretary of State Michael Adams Frankfort, KY - In the midst of a global health pandemic caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19), as a Democratic Governor and a Republican Secretary of State we have proven that we can put partisanship aside to make our elections safer for our people. We know that working across the aisle to reach a bipartisan agreement, regardless of where you live from Washington, D.C. to Frankfort, Kentucky, during any year, certainly an election year, is all too rare. We don't always agree, but we have no disagreement when it comes to protecting the health of Kentuckians during this pandemic, while making sure they are able to exercise their patriotic duty to vote. Gov. Beshear Provides Update on COVID-19 By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Thursday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth. "I know, at this point in our battle against COVID, the weeks can be really long. What I'd ask is, keep it up. Keep wearing the masks," said Gov. Beshear. "All the experts say it's working, not just in general, they say it's working here in Kentucky." Rocky Adkins' Father Back Home after Battling COVID-19 Today, Rocky Adkins, senior advisor to Gov. Beshear and a former state representative, shared that his father, Jess Adkins, 84, is home after contracting COVID-19 and spending two weeks in the hospital and one week at Cardinal Hill for rehabilitation. "I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the front line workers in Kentucky. I'm happy to report that yesterday, my dad was able to return home," said Adkins. "My son Brandon, who tested positive also, is doing great and has not had any serious side effects. I'm proud of both of these fellows. They remind us we need to check on our neighbors. I'm thoroughly convinced that if not for my son watching out for him, my dad probably would have lost his life." Case Information As of 4 p.m. Aug. 27, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 45,978 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 775 of which were newly reported Thursday. One hundred thirty of the newly reported cases were from children ages 18 and younger, of which 14 were children ages 5 and under. The youngest was a two month old from Jefferson County. LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 08/27/2020 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department We added 50 new cases today. We are on track for this to be our largest week of growth since the onset of the outbreak. Currently, our new case rate of 10.17 per 10,000 is considerably higher than the state growth rate at 6.62 per 10,000. Our total cases are projected to double at just over every 28.7 days. We currently have 22 cases in the hospital, which is 5 less than yesterday. Currently, most of our new cases are tied back to long-term care and residential facilities, followed by businesses. Places of worship and schools are now tied for third place. Thirty-eight of our active cases are school age (18 or younger). Imagine how much spread could have occurred in the schools if they had been meeting face-to-face and/or these children were not in isolation. Then imagine all those exposed children bringing the virus home, and then the family members taking it to work and church. Please help us slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your face covering, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing your hand hygiene, increasing your general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of your face.
