Governor's Tuesday update: 700 new cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - As of 4 p.m. Aug. 4, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 32,197 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 700 of which were newly reported Tuesday. Eighteen of the newly reported cases were from children ages 5 and younger, including a 2-month-old and a 6-month-old in Jefferson County. In addition, a 1-year-old in Metcalfe County was positively diagnosed after being exposed to the coronavirus at church and recently traveled to Tennessee.

"We hope to see the trend we think we had over the past couple weeks continue, which is a slow of the growth," the Governor said. "While today we have a higher number than we did at this time last week, we believe there is a general leveling off though today there are more cases than last week."

Unfortunately, Gov. Beshear reported seven new deaths Tuesday, raising the total to 751 Kentuckians lost to the virus.

First Lady Beshear launches Coverings for Kids program

By Lindsay Bloom

Frankfort, KY - First Lady Britainy Beshear on Tuesday announced a new program, Coverings for Kids, which helps Kentuckians to donate facial coverings directly to local school districts.

The First Lady said facial coverings are proven to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus and are critical to reopening schools safely and keeping children, educators and families safe.

"As a mom, nothing is more important to me than protecting each one of Kentucky's children, as well as the teachers and staff who work hard every day to help them learn and grow," said First Lady Beshear. "Kentuckians generosity is unmatched, and during this pandemic this program will help ensure each school has enough masks to protect their students and staff."

The First Lady and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman unveiled the campaign to school district leaders Tuesday afternoon during a webcast with superintendents hosted by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).

Adams meets with Taiwanese Director-General

Frankfort, KY - At the invitation of the Taiwanese government, Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams met virtually with Director-General Elliot Yi-lung Wang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office based in Atlanta.

"I am most honored to have met Director-General Wang, Taiwan's top diplomat for the southeastern U.S.," said Adams. "From the early days of my administration, I've corresponded amicably with Taiwanese officials, and in my term I hope to build on Kentucky's relationship with our Taiwanese friends."

Wang graciously invited Adams to visit Taiwan once conditions permit. "I've never been to Asia," noted Adams, "and I hope my first trip to Asia is to Taiwan."

The two leaders discussed how to strengthen the bonds between Taiwan and Kentucky. Wang expressed a desire for expanded Taiwanese investments in Kentucky. As the state's chief business official, Adams advised he would take what steps he could to assist in bringing more jobs to the Commonwealth. Adams noted that he proudly joined several of his Secretary of State colleagues from around the country recently to issue a joint statement in support of greater bilateral trade and investment between the U.S. and Taiwan.
