CPD: Mask mandate

By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO
Columbia Police Department

With new mandates concerning masks in public we would like to encourage those who have issue to take advantage of many businesses who have been offering curbside and delivery service for some time, many of which have recently started such practices this year to help accommodate needs through 2020.

We would also like to state employees and business owners are not responsible for the current mask mandate handed down by Frankfort, and may themselves not agree with it. However they have chosen to abide by it, until the matter is ultimately decided in a higher court like so many other executive orders and mandates have already been in 2020.

During this time we will state it is a private businesses right to refuse a party's service and ask said party to leave property and we again would remind citizens of Columbia and Adair to take advantage of delivery and curbside pickup if you take issue with wearing masks like so many of us do.

We have an opportunity as a community to show what examples we can be to others throughout this time, 2020 has been a year like no other in recent memory, now is not the time to actively seek more strife and more division.

Masks make a difference, and now they're required

Studies are showing that wearing masks in public is an effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19. Kentucky has seen a fairly consistent increase in cases as businesses have reopened, and today the Governor issued an executive order that requires face coverings in most retail establishments and public places for the next 30 days. We think it's a better compromise than closing businesses back down.

Jelaine Harlow with the health department sends the following link to an article in Science Magazine that explains some of the ways that masks and testing can help to combat asymptomatic spread of COVID-19:

Legislative panel focuses on police body cameras

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - A committee of state House and Senate members took testimony today on the pros and cons of legislation mandating police body cameras in Kentucky.

"If we are going to put a mandatory program for body cams in this state, we have to look at the funding," said University of Kentucky Police Chief Joe Monroe while testifying before the Interim Joint Committee on Judiciary. "There would be small agencies in this state who would not be able to afford these types of programs."

Governor: Increasing cases means face coverings required

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Highlighting his commitment to protecting all Kentuckians, Gov. Andy Beshear today announced Kentuckians must wear face coverings in many situations if the state is going to stop the increase of novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) cases and continue to reopen the economy safely.

"The No. 1 thing a mask can do is protect the health and the life of yourself and those around you," the Governor said. "It can make sure we don't lose more people than we should, it can keep our cases down and it can help us to continue to reopen our economy."

According to health experts, wearing face coverings not only protects others, it also lowers the infection risk for those wearing masks by 65%. The Governor also pointed to analysis from Goldman Sachs showing that if everyone in America was required to wear face coverings in public, it could save the U.S. economy from losing 5% of the Gross Domestic Product. Gov. Beshear noted that 5% of Kentucky's Gross State Product alone is $10.4 billion. So far, 22 states have implemented some sort of order mandating face coverings, although details vary.

Kentucky's new executive order requires Kentuckians to wear face coverings under several circumstances for the next 30 days. The order will be evaluated during that time to determine any additional steps or extension.

The executive order states that face coverings will be required in the following situations:

Carol Perkins: Daily routines

Previous Column: Many have helped with raccoon invasion

By Carol Perkins

Three things we kids had to do before going to school was take a bath, clean our fingernails, ream out our ears, and scrub the rust off our ankles. Not that my mother said those specific things, but we knew they were important. No everyone in my class had a mother like mine.

Because I liked to go barefoot, which my mother never liked for me to do because I might "step on something sharp," my ankles were rusty by bath time. (My first stitches came because of my roaming around without shoes and stepping on a piece of metal. My dad swooped me up with my bleeding ankle and took me to Dr. Dunham, the only doctor in Edmonton, where I got two stitches in a tender part of my ankle. The scar is still there.)

Our feet were dirty, even though we wore shoes because we played on dirt playgrounds or rode through fields on stick horses or make mud pies beside a creek. Feet and between the toes were high on the "be sure to wash all over" order.
