Governor's Tuesday update: Positive cases rising

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continued efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"This remains a very serious global health challenge. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's foremost infectious disease expert, said only yesterday that we are 'still knee-deep in the first wave' of coronavirus infections here in the U.S.," the Governor said. "The number of positive cases has been rising across the nation. Although eventually there will be a vaccine, we need to be mindful that it will not be perfected or ready to distribute anytime soon. We therefore must remain vigilant to protect the most vulnerable among us."

The Governor reminded everyone that his next press briefing will be held Thursday, July 9, at 4pmET.

Case Information
As of 4 p.m. July 7, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 17,519 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 371 of which were newly reported Tuesday.

"Today is a tough day in our fight against the coronavirus. While we've long noted that case numbers fluctuate due to differences in reporting - and that weekends often see lower tallies that sometimes catch up during the week - today's numbers are cause for serious concern," the Governor said. "We have worked too long and hard, and sacrificed too much, to squander the gains we have made in this fight. However, the only way to secure our safety is to recommit ourselves to doing what we all know is required of us: washing our hands frequently, staying at least six feet from others, avoiding crowds, getting tested frequently and cooperating with contact tracers if they call with information."

LWC Cycling finishes No. 7 in National Rankings

By Chris A. Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson cycling team finished the season with a No. 7 overall ranking in the 2019-20 USA Cycling National Collegiate Varsity Rankings, despite the COVID-19 shortened season.

The Blue Raiders racked up points in the three disciplines they competed in at the national championships. LWC scored 46 points in Track as well as Cross Country and 49 points in Mountain Bike to total 141 points.

Due to the shortened season, the Blue Raiders were unable to compete in their best discipline, BMX as well as ROAD.

"We competed at Track Nationals in September, a return for the program after being absent for the last few years," Head Coach Josh Patton said. "We had a great effort in the Team Sprint placing ninth as Luis Rivera also performed well throughout the weekend to show me promising growth in the discipline over the next few years."

Gatton Students Persist With Summer Learning

By Tommy Newton

Bowling Green, KY - In spite of recent global events concerning COVID-19, students from The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky have continued summer learning in virtual internships, reimagined programs and, in some cases, in-person at WKU, around the Commonwealth, and around the globe.

In addition to prestigious research internships through the National Science Foundation (NSF) and internships through The Gatton Academy's new public-private partnership program, the Gatton Sponsored Internship Program, this summer also features virtual study abroad opportunities.

Gatton Academy students from the local area include:
  • Elizabeth Cook, Adair County High School class of 2021, who was selected to research Synthesis of semiconductor nano-particles in ionic liquids with Dr. Lawrence Hill of the WKU Department of Chemistry.

  • Elisha Fletcher, Russell County High School Class of 2021, who was selected to study Piranha Bite Force and Morphometrics with Dr. Steve Huskey of the WKU Department of Biology.

  • Samuel Leveridge, Russell County High School class of 2021, who had been selected for a study abroad partnership with Harlaxton College in Grantham, Englad, and will instead be studying Honors: Introduction to Literature with Drs. Dawn Hall and Ted Hovet of the WKU Department of English
"Gatton Academy students actively seek opportunities to continue their learning and contribute to their communities year-round. This summer is no different as they are continuing research and internships online, learning critical languages, and working in family businesses and local grocery stores," director Dr. Lynette Breedlove said. "I admire our students' dedication as they contribute to local economies, as well as state and national scientific advances."

A list of grouped student summer plans appears below followed by individual student experiences.

Letter: What are we teaching children about masks

Cynthia Meyer writes:
In a recent letter received from Adair County Judge Executive Gale B. Cowan dated June 25,2020 regarding a county associate -"why isn't he wearing a mask if he was speaking to a citizen while on the clock?" -and I quote from the letter "Masks are only a recommendation by Governor Beshear and the Fiscal Court, not a requirement. They are highly recommended when around a crowd of people."

Letter: No mask, get sick, don't go to ER

James Roberts writes:
I understand fully if you do or do not wear a mask, it is your choice. That’s what so great about this country and what it was founded upon. Choice and freedoms. Neither one of those came lightly but at a very personal expense from someone in our family.

I personally know of 3 people that have died from this horrible disease. If you ever experience someone dying of this then you will feel a little different about the mask situation.

There are masks that help with the spread of disease and viruses. That is, if you're human and have feeling for your fellow man. The one reason have we laws for speed limits, seatbelts, and driving while under the influence is sometimes we as a society can’t control or govern ourselves so someone has to step in and make that decision for us.

If you care then wear. If not, stay home. The ones that don’t care or won’t wear a mask will be the first ones to call an ambulance or show up at the emergency room if they get sick. So if you don’t wear one and you get sick, stay home and don’t call anyone for help! - Just my opinion, James

Letter: What are we teaching children about masks

Jennifer writes:
I whole heartedly agree regarding face mask wearing here in Adair County and likely widespread around us! Seems our local citizens are very complacent about wearing a mask in public! It is hard to imagine there is not more concern for others by this simple, yes somewhat bothersome gesture of wearing a mask, for the sake of keeping those at risk safe from this virus!

Secondly isn't it true children learn from adults? What sort of example are the adults of this community showing their children by playing chicken with authority and the virus by ignoring the recommendation of social distancing and wearing of a mask in public areas? Frankly, I believe they are teaching them that "I" matters more than others. How sad is this?? Aren't we better than that?

It's not just the general public either as I also have seen employees not wearing their masks. Some have had them hanging on their necks, down on their chins and not covering their nose also, even while huddling in groups chatting. If it's not worn properly it is useless. No one likely can say they like to wear a mask, but my goodness isn't there a time that we do what we need to just because it's the right thing to do!!!???
Sincerely, Jennifer

Clifty Creek drowning in Russell County

By Mary Ellis with Sergeant Travis Neal of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife
and Russell County Coroner Coroner Mark Coots

An apparent drowning occurred Monday afternoon in Russell County at Clifty Creek on Lake Cumberland. According to Russell County Coroner Coroner Mark Coots, 17 year old Tyler Grant of Russell County was swimming with several friends in a cove at Clifty Creek.

Witnesses reportedly stated that Grant had made his way across the cove and was on his way back when he apparently cramped up and went under.

Divers recovered Grant's body in about 45 minutes.

Coots said the cause of death was drowning. There were no signs of foul play and no call for an autopsy, but a toxicology test will be performed. The investigation is continuing.
