Cameron Defends 'Casey's Law' in Court

Law allows family members, friends to seek court-ordered drug treatment for loved ones suffering from addiction

By Elizabeth Kuhn

Frankfort, KY - In furthering his commitment to fighting the drug epidemic, Attorney General Daniel Cameron today announced his office is defending a Kentucky law used to combat drug addiction and help individuals suffering from substance use disorders receive treatment. The Matthew Casey Wethington Act for Substance Abuse Intervention, commonly known as "Casey's Law," allows family members and friends to secure court-ordered drug treatment for a loved one struggling with a substance use disorder.

The law, passed unanimously by the Kentucky Senate and 94-1 by the House of Representatives in 2004, is currently facing a constitutional challenge in the Kentucky Court of Appeals. In a brief filed this week by Attorney General Cameron, he argues that the law is constitutional and should be upheld.

Letter: Agrees With Laura

Deb writes:
I agree with Laura about wearing masks. We have three people, including myself, who have immune system issues. So does my 87 year old mom who we shop for. I am appalled by the lack of mask wearing when shopping. Each time I go to Walmart I count how many people are wearing masks. Other than the employees I haven't counted over nine and they definitely aren't social distancing. I simply don't understand. Please save my life, my family members lives and those around you and PLEASE wear a mask. --Deb

Quarles hopes USMCA will bring economic boost to Kentucky

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles is optimistic Kentucky agricultural producers will see a much-needed economic boost with today's implementation of a new trade relationship between the United States and its North American neighbors.

"As the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement begins to go in effect today, many Kentucky farm families are grateful for trade certainty among our nation's two largest trading partners," Commissioner Quarles said. "For our agricultural producers, the agreement modernizes and strengthens food and agriculture trade. I am grateful to President Trump and Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue for understanding the importance of this agreement to our agricultural producers."

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) begins a new chapter for trade between the three countries. The agreement is a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) providing stable access to the Canadian and Mexican markets, providing increased growth in the U.S. economy.

According to the National Association of State Department of Agriculture, USMCA modernizes trade relations between the three countries by:

Help prevent impaired driving crashes this holiday weekend

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - This Independence Day, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind drivers that "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving."

Unfortunately, this summertime celebration creates dangerous road conditions when drivers choose to drive while impaired.

"If you are under the influence of any substance and choose to get behind the wheel, you put everyone on the road in danger, including yourself," said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. "During the Fourth of July holiday, make sure to have a sober, designated driver for all your festivities."

Masks uncomfortable, so are bras, glasses

Laura writes:
I only go out to Walmart, and I wear a mask. Up until last week the wearing of masks was surprising, in the store. Not enough people were wearing them, but definitely more than half. Also, there are marks on the floor to allow for one-direction paths, and most people were following those directions, and keeping a distance from people.

But last Thursday in the store was terrible. Maybe 10% was wearing masks, almost nobody was following the one-direction paths or social distancing. It was like the urgency of these past months has suddenly disappeared.

I don't get it. I really don't. Yes, wearing a mask is uncomfortable. But so is wearing a bra. And glasses. My spouse is immunocompromised. If they get it, they will most likely die from it. Please wear a mask. Please. If doctors and nurses can wear a mask a whole day in the hospital, you can wear one if you go to the store.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 6/30/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Governor and the Commissioner of Public Health both reinforced the message today regarding how important it is for the public to wear a mask when out and about. Our best chance for slowing the spread is for everyone to wear a mask when out in public, to avoid crowds, to social distance (stay 6-feet from others), to wash their hands with soap and water often and thoroughly, to stay home if they have a fever or are coughing, to increase sanitation, and to avoid touching their faces.

Governor's update June 30, 2020

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday updated Kentuckians on several state initiatives, including continuing efforts to address the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) as well as economic developments.

"Today we're going to talk about not just the present, which we spend a lot of time talking about, but we're going to start talking about the future. Last week when we were able to talk about AgriTech, an exciting area that we are going to lead in in the future, I think it was something people need to see, that we are not going to be battling this virus forever," the Governor said. "There is a tomorrow, we are planning for the tomorrow and we have an opportunity in creating that tomorrow to change our economy, to make Kentucky a leader, to focus on areas that are going to lead for the next 30 years and give us a brighter future with better jobs."

Gov. Beshear and administration officials also spoke about the challenges posed by surging coronavirus cases in some other states and the latest state budget projections. He also made a major announcement that will significantly reduce the number unemployment insurance claims brought on by the pandemic.
