Socially distanced/in-person youth theater workshops July 7-23

Campbellsville, KY - Campbellsville University and Town Hall Productions' Creative Spirit Theater Academy will be hosting socially distanced/in-person youth theater workshops July 7-23. Assisting with the workshops are Campbellsville University employees who also work with Town Hall and the Creative Spirit Academy.

Workshops will be held at BOUNCE, 195 City Park Road, Campbellsville. BOUNCE is located in Miller Park. Cost for each workshop is $65; however, a few workshops have an additional $10 supplies fee.

Andrew Ward, owner of Town Hall Productions and BOUNCE, said social distance/safety measures include: participants and instructors must wear masks, and class size will be limited enabling instructors and participants to maintain six feet between participants.

The classes are as follows (all times are Eastern):


  • Tuesday, July 7-Thursday, July 9 - 10 a.m.-noon for ages 6-8; Mask Making with Alia McClendon with a $10 supplies fee. "Let's make and decorate some fun masks!" McClendon said.

  • Tuesday, July 7-Thursday, July 9 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 6-8; Creating Characters with Jon Andrew. "Together you'll learn how to build a character from the ground up using all the tools at your disposal - your body, voice and imagination," Andrew said. He said no experience or supplies are needed.

  • Tuesday, July 7-Thursday, July 9 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 9-14; Playwriting with Alia McClendon, "Let's discover the process of play writing from beginning to end. At the end of the week, you can enter your finished play into a competition to have a stage reading with Campbellsville University college students," McClendon said.

  • Tuesday, July 14-Thursday, July 16 - 10 a.m. until noon for ages 9-14, Props Making-Petit Fours with Alia McClendon, who said participants will create mini stage desserts. There is a $10 supplies fee.

  • Tuesday, July 14-Thursday, July 16 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 6-8, HSM Dance! with Alia McClendon who will teach some of the iconic dance moves from High School Musical. "After all, we are in this together," McClendon said.

  • Tuesday, July 14-Thursday, July 16 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 9-14, Creating Characters with Jon Andrew. "Together, we'll learn how to build a character from the ground up, using all the tools at your disposal - your body, voice and imagination! No experience or supplies needed," he said.

  • Tuesday, July 14-Thursday, July 16 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 9-14, Beginning Sewing: Market Bags with Starr Garrett who said the class is for beginning level sewers.

    She said students will learn to use their sewing machine while they make a quick and easy market bag. Participants must bring their own sewing machine, a pair of scissors and a seam ripper to class. All other supplies will be provided. There is a $10 supply fee.

  • Tuesday, July 21-Thursday, July 23 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 6-8, Props Making-Cakes with Alia McClendon who will show participants how to decorate stage cakes. "They will look so good you'll wish you could eat them!" she said.

  • Tuesday, July 21-Thursday, July 23 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 9-14, Dialects with Jon Andrew. "Join us as we travel around the globe and try our hand at speaking like our neighbors across the world!" he said. No experience or supplies are needed.

  • Tuesday, July 21-Thursday, July 23 - 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for ages 9-14, Advanced Sewing: T-shirts with Starr Garrett. This session will involve T-shirt sewing for students already comfortable using a sewing machine, and they will create an everyday costume.

    She said students should bring their sewing machine, a pair of scissors and a seam ripper to class and all other supplies will be provided. There is a $10 supply fee.

Information about the instructors are below:

Starr Garrett is the director of the Theater Department at Campbellsville University. She has received honors from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for her direction of multiple shows, including: An Enemy of the People, The Drowsy Chaperone and RED at CU.

She actively serves in leadership with the Southeastern Theater Conference and has a passion for serving her community through the arts.

Alia McClendon is the community theater manager at Campbellsville University. She has worked with several community theaters and local high school's theater programs over the years. She has been working with young theater artists for the last five years and has experience in costume design and voice.

Some of her previous credits include Macbeth, Secret Garden, Little Shop of Horrors, Oliver!, Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind and A Year With Frog and Toad KIDS.

Jon Andrew and his wife, Emily, recently moved from Hattiesburg, Miss. where he received his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Favorite past credits include Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Ozark Actors Theatre), Tartuffe in Tartuffe (USM) and Peter in Peter and the Starcatcher (USM). Last July, Andrew joined the Campbellsville University Theater Department as a theater arts instructor.
