Field of stones, for Memorial Day

By Tommy Melson

Nothing more humbling, than a walk among heroes, in a field of stones...
Marking those who gave their last breath, so we can have a freedom filled home...

A small breeze rustles up the pain and tears of each families sacrifice for the ones they love dear...
and all the while understanding that their sacrifice, let's us sleep without fear...

So, I will be forever humbled by these soldiers of sacrifice and the families that had to let them leave...
I will honor them by living a life that shows respect, and love for all the fallen hero's, here and overseas...

Decoration Day, and a list of Adair County's Civil War dead

By Mike Watson

Ed encouraged me to compile this list, and it first appeared in 2016, I believe: Decoration Day in the United States was born out of the devastation of the Civil War. During this 'darkest of times' our nation suffered in every possible way. Millions sacrificed in various ways, more than half a million men and some women made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to the cause. Even before the war ended there were some communities across the nation that paid tribute to these fallen by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. By 1868 the new-born custom of visiting the graves of the fallen had become something of a ritual, and grew with each passing year.

Decoration Day, now Memorial Day, has become a general day of remembrance for all our dead. With the observance of the day more than a century ago, families began to decorate the graves of all their departed, whether veteran or not. Today we continue this observance. Southerners in particular make the pilgrimage to family cemeteries, often far from their current abode, to honor kinsmen with floral tributes and placement of flags for veterans. This day became a time of reunion for families and friends who, a century ago and since, may not have seen each other since the last observance.

God Bless those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in time of conflict.

Lindsey announces plans to reopen for Fall 2020 Semester

By Venus Popplewell

Lindsey Wilson College will resume in-person instruction and reopen residence halls for the academic year 2020-21 according to a statement from LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., on Friday. The announcement comes three months before the scheduled date for students to move back to the dorms in August.

"I have assembled a team of faculty, staff, students and trustees to gain as much input as possible in arriving at this decision to open safely. The advisory team includes physicians, attorneys, higher education leaders, public relations executives, business leaders and community health professionals. In addition, I have had calls in the last week with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senator Paul, Congressman Rogers and Congressman Yarmuth to receive the benefit of their counsel. Our number one concern has been and will continue to be the safety of our Lindsey Wilson College family including our students, staff and faculty as well as the quality of the education we are able to provide.

"While our accreditor, SACSCOC, has authorized the College to deliver our courses in an online format since 2010, we know that our distinctive differentiator is having that gifted faculty member interacting personally with each student in their classroom. It is this small, intimate classroom experience that has served the College so well since 1903 and made the transition to online delivery so seamless when classes were necessarily moved to an online format for the spring semester.

"The College is developing detailed plans for a safe return. We have placed an order for PPE equipment that includes 17,000 masks, more than six dozen infrared thermometers, as well as gowns, gloves and hand sanitizer.

Letter: The missing flame thrower story

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Now, I just gotta hear the "flame thrower" story. Don't think I've heard it before. --BJF
Comments re: April 14, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to turn up anything in our archives, but we'll post it the minute we track it down.

The June 11, 1947, Adair County News does mention that "Luther Turner, Jr., uses a flame thrower to clean out fence rows and finds it a quick and economical way of killing small bushes, briers and other unwanted plants in fences and other places where a mower cannot be used."

It would be nice to know if flame throwers were trendy farm implements mid-century, or if there was a single piece of war surplus being passed and traded around Adair County, terrorizing fencerows and wildlife and worrying spouses. --Pen

Memorial Day: Time to remember those of valor

Click this link to view the list of Veterans from Adair County.

The tradition of honoring our country's fallen defenders began as a springtime custom following the Civil War. Originally, called Decoration Day, it was a time to remember those whose valor knew no bounds.

To the list of those who died at Gettysburg and Bull Run, we have added names from San Juan Hill, Verdun, Corregidor, Inchon, Khe Sanh, Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and a thousand other places touched by war.

For most of the year, these brave souls lie in anonymity, but on Memorial Day we bring them back to life with our thanks for their great sacrifice.
