Instructional packets due Tuesday, April 7, 2020

By Phyllis Curry

The first 14-day phase of non-traditional instruction ended last Friday for all Adair County students. All student work packets are due by 3pmCT on Tuesday afternoon, April 7, 2020. Packets should be dropped off at the Adair County Board of Education, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY 42728. Please place packets in the red newspaper rack at the front of the building.

Student attendance for NTI days is calculated based on the returned packets, and the assignments count as student work on an NTI day; therefore, it is very important that every student's completed packet be returned. All students are on spring break April 6-10, so there are no NTI assignments for this week.

Governor Beshear announced last Thursday schools should continue non-traditional instruction through Friday, May 1, 2020. The second phase of NTI for Adair County students will begin Monday, April 13 and will be for weeks 4-6. Students are encouraged to complete assignments digitally if at all possible, but paper packets will be available for pick-up at all schools Monday, April 13, 2020, at 9amCT for those who need a packet.

History Monday: Early Roads, Bridges, and More

By Mike Watson

A major trail from the Bluegrass into Tennessee passed through what is now Adair County. Early pioneers followed the well-defined natural roads made by the North American bison. Two bison trails crossed near the where the Town Branch crosses Jamestown Street in present day Columbia. The town likely sprang up where it did due to the close proximity to the trials. Where the bison trails crossed creeks and rivers, there were natural fords that were useful to the pioneers.

Fords across the Green and Cumberland Rivers and larger creeks like Russell and Crocus were used by the pioneers and their descendants and some are likely in use today, though we may not know for certain. David Doak and Vandiver Banks ran ferries across the Green River at an early date. William Caldwell owned a ferry that crossed Russell Creek, probably in the vicinity of Columbia and prior to the building of the first bridges. One of the DeMoss brothers operated a ferry across Russell Creek somewhere near present Milltown in the early 1800s.

Roads were important to Adair from an early date for obvious reasons. Freight was hauled from great distances to Columbia and from here to Danville, Springfield, Lebanon and Louisville. Freight lines were big business in this area at one time. The mail was carried first by horse back and later by the stage coaches that traveled from Columbia to Burkesville, Campbellsville and various other towns in the region. The Barbee Stage Coach line was the last to operate out of Columbia.

Making emergency plan, good at-home school work

Reporting the emergency siren test this morning reminds us that this is a good time of year to check supplies and make a plan for just-in-case. This might be good at-home-homework for students with the added benefit that the perfect emergency plan would include the whole family.

Kentucky's health website includes how to create a plan in case your family may not be together if a disaster like a tornado (usually the top concern in this season in this area) strikes. Below are the recommended steps to take to complete this "homework."

Step 1: Put together a plan by discussing these 4 questions with members of the household to start your emergency plan.
- How will we get emergency alerts and warnings?
- What's our shelter plan?
- What's our evacuation route?
- What is our family/household communication plan?

Quarles commends Kroger for expanding local farm options

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles is praising the nation's largest supermarket chain for its increased commitment to selling Kentucky Proud farm food.

"As Kentucky's Agriculture Commissioner, my administration is focused on increasing the amount of Kentucky Proud foods on grocery shelves across the Commonwealth and the nation," said Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles. "Due to the hard work of our administration, Kentucky farm families, and Kroger, Kentuckians can now find more local protein products than ever before. On behalf of our family farms, I want to commend Kroger for their commitment to supporting Kentucky agriculture, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."

Kroger began selling Freedom Run Farm ground lamb in 25 Kentucky stores on March 31. Greg Osborn, meat and seafood merchandiser for Kroger's Louisville Division, said sales got off to a good start. Racks of lamb and porterhouse loin chops are also available in select stores.

FM2 first day of 2020 season reported to be a good start

Opening day of Farmers Market on the Square (FM2) in Columbia finished up after noon Saturday, April 4, 2020 and resulted in a positive outlook for the season on the part of vendors.

Upwards of 200 people were said to have gone through the market, very orderly and maintaining social distancing as instructed by state leaders to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Co-director Donna Jones said they had some new faces and lots of regulars with very good feedback, "folks are glad to have another option for fresh foods."

A wide lane behind the yellow ribbon is for walking through plus a lane is protected for drive-through in case anyone needs to order from their car and have it brought over to them.

Vendors say they will work with the public in every way so that a safe, healthy experience is enjoyed by all.

Masks being made locally to help with shortage

Kathy Jones of Columbia says several members of Joyful Hearts Quilt Guild are making cloth masks. If someone needs masks, contact her at 270-250-4216. These are not the surgical masks but we are being encouraged to wear them as some protection. She writes, "we have two sizes - 10 inch and 8 inch. She says they are not charging, just doing their civic duty.

Cora Jessie of Sulphur Well, KY in Metcalfe County writes that her "sister Anita London Bass is making masks non stop. She doesn’t have a price on them, however, she is a widow and on a fixed income and could use a donation for the masks. The masks are very well made and very pretty." She can be reached at 270-590-3948 or cory@scrtc.com.

Seamstress Debbie Burris is making face masks in Adair County. She says anyone can message her on Facebook or call 270-250-1277. She has donated many. Going forward, to pay for supplies, her charge would be $4 each if she furnishes fabric, or $2 each if fabric is provided. She adds, "stay safe everyone!"

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says masks should:
- Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
- Be secured with ties or ear loops
- Include multiple layers of fabric
- Allow for breathing without restriction
- Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape

This link has all the details for sewing masks and the no-sew variety.
