ADAPT: the word today and several other days in history

By Phillip Coffey:

ADAPT. The word of the day and everyday is 'adapt,' among others like all those included in the scriptures of 'Faith, Hope, and Charity' - 'The Big three'. Everything evolves but we must always hold the scriptures in high regard. The scriptures are often the most difficult to follow in crisis of war, famine, plagues, or infestations that we presently fear.

In my lifetime the first crisis among many others on the national or world scene that I recall was the 'Cuban Missile crisis'. My understanding is that the proverbial 'doomsday clock ' approached the dreaded 12:00 o'clock at its closest in my lifetime at that point.

I was very young but I understood and could feel the fear among my older and wiser kin.

Field burning

2020-04-03 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
There was a lot of smoke rising in the western sky today. Miss Vicky Pike checked since it was not far from her Hunter place and said it was just Terry Partin burning off his CRP (conservative reserve program) grounds, no emergency.

Letter: Email question for photo contest

Jennifer Parker writes:
I was wondering if you have an email address for Tony Rose (4-H). The one listed for the Week 3, 4-H photo contest doesn't seem to be working.

Jennifer, thanks for writing. We confirmed that the correct email for Tony is listed, trose@uky.edu, and Tony did send this advice if you're still having trouble:

Sometimes the university email will limit the size of a file that can be sent to us usually one picture is not a problem but with some of the sizes of the picture files anymore it might be. If they would like to they can send it to me by text message my phone number is 270-634-0401. Just make sure to include the name of the youth and their age. --Tony

Kramp named ACA Ledford Scholar for female inmate research

By Scarlett Birge

Campbellsville, KY - Shannon Kramp, a junior at Campbellsville University from Danville who is double majoring in psychology and criminal justice, has been announced as an Appalachian College Association (ACA) Ledford Scholar with Dr. Dale Wilson, director of criminal justice programs and associate professor, as her sponsor.

"We knew we wanted to do a research project that focused on female inmates," Kramp said. "They're often called the forgotten offenders because they can't see their family as much as male inmates."

Kramp worked on a research study last spring focusing on learned helplessness in inmates. She volunteered to help Wilson and is now part of a team, including Wilson; Dr. Emily Hayden, assistant professor of criminal justice; and students Rebecca Satterly, a senior from Bardstown, Ky.; Taylor Elardo, a senior from Stockton, Calif.; and Jasmin Green, a senior from Radcliff, Ky., that will teach a program to women convicted of violent offences and incarcerated at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women (KCIW).

Recommended video: how to bring food into the house

"...Picture germs like glitter you'd use to make posters - then avoid getting any of that glitter onto yourself or things you will touch." Hmmmmm...

By Linda Waggener

Dr. Phil Aaron's daughter, Sarah Aaron Bromley, sent a video with a medical professional's guidelines on how to manage food coming into the house, from to-go orders to grocery bags, avoiding bringing in virus germs.

Dr. Jeffrey VanWingen provides very detailed information that's easy to understand and not too hard to follow.

After watching the video, my nephew Will shopped for me at the end of his third shift job at Walmart and brought the grocery bags to the porch. We kept the six-foot social distance and had a good visit in the morning sun.

Summit Manor confirms first COVID-19 positive case

By Ann Bowdan Wilder

Over the past several weeks, Signature HealthCARE at Summit Manor has taken a proactive and aggressive approach against the Coronavirus and its related illness, COVID-19. That preparedness mandated being ready not for "if," but "when" our facility faces a confirmed COVID-19 exposure. Signature HealthCARE at Summit Manor has received confirmation of its first COVID-19 positive case.

"We've been working around the clock getting ready for COVID-19, and we are ready, now that the day is here," said Chris Cox, Chief Operating Officer for Signature HealthCARE. "This is why we hired the experts we have on our team, including a new Chief Infectious Disease Physician. Our intense preparations have paid off, especially in this situation, with staff screening themselves and residents daily, and staff readily identifying anyone who might have the virus early and getting them sent out and tested right away."

Signature wants to assure our residents, families, and stakeholders that we are taking every precaution possible and are following the strict guidelines of the CDC and other controlling government agencies which include: screening all stakeholders and residents daily for symptoms of the virus, restricting facility visitation in accordance with federal and state guidelines, and using alternate methods of communication for families, including telehealth, social media, and the mailing of cards and letters. In this COVID-19 climate, we must continue to mandate, per government instruction, that our families continue in this restricted protocol. It is of the utmost importance for the protection of your loved one.

Letter: thanks for comments on Keltnertown Stump Negotiations

Phillip Coffey writes:

To all who commented and to my lifelong friend Billy Joe Fudge, many thanks for your kind words about my story, Keltnertown Stump Negotiations, and also Uncle Ural. I learned so much from Uncle Ural and the many people that gathered at the store. I miss all of them that have been long gone from living but never hopefully from memory.

I enjoy your stories. I have learned much about forestry from your stories even though I have spent much of my life in a thicket, literally and figuratively. - Phil

Carol Perkins: Home remedies

Previous Column: Wild Kingdom

By Carol Perkins

I thought we had a roll of duct tape somewhere in the house, but I couldn't find it. Guy vowed he didn't have any in his work area, so I asked him to buy me a roll somewhere when he went to the post office. "But you have a roll of packing tape in the drawer," he said. "Duct tape doesn't work on boxes very well." I wasn't going to ship anything. I assured him I had to have duct tape for a project. Nothing else would work.

"This roll cost me eight dollars," he announced as he laid it on the kitchen countertop. I smiled.

I didn't tell him at first, but I needed the duct tape to rid myself of a few tag warts. Supposedly, by covering them with duct tape, they would/should eventually go away. (My doctor froze the original tag wart next to my ear, but the culprit came back.) What did I have to lose using the duct tape?

I waited until Guy went to bed and then tore off three pieces. I stuck one under my eye, one on each side of my face, and then I saw a small potential one beside my nose. Once the CPAP machine covered my face, Guy never noticed the silver slivers. Then I forgot. As I was drinking my first cup of coffee before showering, Guy gave me a double take. "What is that on your face?"

Governor recommends schools stay closed until May 1

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Governor Andy Beshear recommended Thursday that school districts statewide extend the suspension of in-person instruction until at least May 1 in the latest intensification of efforts to fight the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Governor spoke earlier in the day with school superintendents from across the commonwealth about the need to keep the restrictions in place as positive cases of the disease surge. He said he expects private schools to follow the guidance as well.

"I have encouraged all of our school districts to extend that nontraditional instruction, making sure that our kids out there have learning activities and meal service," Gov. Beshear said. "This is further sacrifice by our kids and by our educators, but it's absolutely necessary."

He said officials are watching data coming in from across the state and nation and studying how other cities are dealing with the surge of cases. The Governor said a decision to further extend the restrictions, perhaps even canceling the rest of the school year for in-person instruction, was possible.

"There is a real chance that we don't go back to in-person instruction this year, but we're not there yet," Gov. Beshear said.

Sentences commuted for non-violent offenders
Honoring his commitment to safeguard the health and safety of all Kentuckians, including corrections staff and those in custody, Gov. Beshear announced Thursday plans to commute the sentences for hundreds of non-violent offenders. The move reduces the risk of virus transmission for an at-risk population as well as for Department of Corrections officers and other personnel.

Long term care questions are still welcome

By Mandy Weston, Lake Cumberland District Ombudsman

There is a little known program in every state mandated by a 1978 amendment to the Older Americans Act. It is the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Its goal is to help assure that long-term care facility residents live harmoniously and with dignity, feeling free to voice complaints or concerns without reprisal.

In these unprecedented times The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is unable to visit long-term care residents, but the program is still available to support residents and families by phone or by email.

Please contact the ombudsman with any long-term care questions or concerns you might have. The Lake Cumberland Long-Term Care Ombudsman can be reached at (800) 264-7093 or mandy@lcadd.org.
