Kentucky selected for NFGFC's 2020 DON'T QUIT Campaign

Educators can nominate their schools for one of three $100,000 DON'T QUIT! Fitness Centers

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - With a goal of ending childhood obesity, Gov. Andy Beshear and fitness icon Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils (NFGFC), announced Monday that Kentucky has been selected for the Councils's 2020 DON'T QUIT! Campaign.

"Our children and their health are a top priority for Britainy and me," Gov. Andy Beshear said. "As parents of 9- and 10-year-olds, we know the importance of physical activity and the positive effects on their self-esteem and academics. I appreciate Jake Steinfeld and the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils selecting Kentucky for this worthwhile campaign. He and I have a common goal of improving health outcomes for our children including ending childhood obesity. This is a real opportunity for every elementary and middle school in the state to demonstrate what they are doing to be physically active and healthy."

Gov. Beshear and Jake Steinfeld encourage educators to visit www.natgovfit.org, download the simple nomination form and let the NFGFC know why your school deserves to be awarded a brand new, taxpayer free, fitness center.

The NFGFC will deliver a state-of-the-art DON'T QUIT! Fitness Center to three Kentucky elementary or middle schools. School nominations will be accepted starting today until Friday, March 20, 2020. Download Kentucky's nomination form here: http://natgovfit.org/nominate-your-school, and fill out the short, easy application.

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman today announced approximately $955,000 in grant funding has been awarded for the cleanup of 121 illegal dumps in 21 counties across the Commonwealth

"Illegal dump sites are a blight on this beautiful state of ours," Gov. Beshear said. "Cleaning these will not only restore properties but will provide a healthier environment for Kentuckians."

The following counties received grants: Breathitt, Butler, Calloway, Estill, Green, Hart, Henderson, Johnson, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Lincoln, Logan, Magoffin, Marion, Mercer, Metcalfe, Owsley, Pike, Warren, and Wolfe.

Sixth-Annual Coming of Age Ceremony Held at LWC

By Travis Smith

Friday, January 31, marked the Sixth Annual Coming of Age Ceremony for international students studying abroad at LWC. Traditionally, the Coming of Age ceremony -- also known as Seijin no Hi -- is held throughout city halls in Japan on the second Monday in January. The ceremony, which dates to the 8th century, celebrates when a person in Japan reaches legal adulthood, which is the age of 20.

Three LWC students from Japan were recognized during the ceremony Friday at the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center. Classmates, faculty, staff and area residents gathered as Mayor of Columbia Pamela Hoots congratulated the three students and discussed major events that have occurred in their lifetime.

"This is a great event, not only for the college but also for the community as a whole," said Hoots. "By making the decision to study in the United States here at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, we hope to play an active part in helping these students fulfill their hopes and dreams. "
