Letter: Remembers dad playing checkers Darrell Overstreet writes: I can certainly remember my dad playing checkers at the Checker Room. Those guys had a great time. If you walked in from of the street you might think they were enemies but that was part of the fun. Memories of Amos Fox Some thoughts stirred up by January 17, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener By JIM I always enjoy reading Ed's "Around Adair" columns but a name in the one from January 17, 1978 one caught my attention. From what I've heard, Amos Fox loved playing checkers more than breakfast. For several years, he did custom bulldozing work, and was known to leave the dozer running if he needed to make a quick run to Russell Springs or Jamestown for parts or lunch or whatever. However, if he caught wind of a hot checker game in progress, the bulldozer and whatever had brought him to town would get shoved to the back burner, and he'd sometimes spend hours playing while the old dozer chugged away. January 17, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener The article below first appeared in the January 17, 1978, issue of the Adair County News. Topics included sledding and how easy kids had it in 1978, a nail-biting skiing expedition at Plum Point, the green thumb of former Columbia Mayor Ralph Willis, Joe Johnson's Checker Club, K.C. Bradshaw's litter of mostly-collie puppies, and nearly-Black-Friday level sales at retailers during the Inauguration Day events. --Pen By Ed Waggener Sledding is different today The snow this past week brought out the sledders. Sledding is not the rigorous sport it was when I was a kid, if what Joe Johnson told me is true. He saw a group of kids riding over Graded Hill on Frazier Avenue, the way we used to do. But, he said, they had a modern labor-saving device to get them back up to the top of the hill: they'd hitch onto a four- wheeler which would pull them back up. "They were really having a time," Johnson said. "They had a big bonfire built at the top and with the four-wheeler taking the work out of it, all they have to do is ride over the hill." When Joe Johnson was a kid, he had to make his own sled. "I did it by cutting off the the bottom rungs of a ladder. then I took some guttering and made me some runners. it worked pretty good." Willard Cheatham, owner of Columbia Gulf, says that he had his own method of getting around when he was young and it snowed. He'd cut down a cedar tree, hook it on behind a mule, and ride all over the farm, perched on the soft boughs of the cedar. Ski season is here, too You just have to look for the best in everything. Snow has its advantages. Just ask the owners of the now-defunct Renegade Resort, at Crossville, Tennessee. They wanted snow. Their lodge went out of the picture because no snow meant no snowy ski slopes and no snowy ski slopes meant no skiers, and no skiers meant no money to pay the mortgage. LWC Men's Basketball falls short against No. 1 Georgetown By Christopher Coombs Georgetown, KY - The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team pulled within two points midway through the second half but would fall short in their upset bid against No. 1-ranked Georgetown 97-81 at the Davis-Reed Alumni Gym. Six Blue Raiders (14-8, 3-5 MSC) finished the game in double figures as Reece Brooks led the way with 18 points and seven assists. Payton Cundiff finished with 16 as Matthew Eldridge just missed out on a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Malik Hart had 12 points, Avery Edwards had 11 and Kel Stotts managed 10. The Blue Raiders shot an even 50 percent from the floor including a 42.1 mark from three but the Tigers (19-0, 8-0 MSC) were slightly more efficient, knocking down 55.2 percent of their attempts. Georgetown controlled the glass outrebounding LWC 38-26. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-01-26 09:11:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports

Letter: Possible scam note left on my door James Roberts writes: "I checked my front door and noticed that I had a Delivery Notice on it. It looked legit with official lettering, phone number and the first name of the contact person on it written with an ink pen. "I called the number and finally got someone named "John". Thinking that this was an important letter or something of that nature he informed me that state law required that they make contact with someone to talk to them about final burial expenses.
