On Saturday, December 14, 2019, Adair County Sheriff's Deputy Chandler Staten responded to a dispatch of a single-vehicle auto collision with injury 7 miles north of Columbia on KY 551.

Letter: Agrees with Mike

Joe Hare writes:
I think Mike Watson has nailed it. If it had been in water from a downpour, most likely no would be wading water or mud to get this photo. The camera's of that time were not in their cell phones as we have today, to make it easy to do. Guess we are getting soft. --Joe

Letter: Communal love for our history

Mike Watson writes:
Few things do my heart more good than to watch spirited participation and debate on what Ed Waggener would have truly enjoyed--the history of Columbia and Adair County! There have been some great and thoughtful remarks and our communal love for our history continues to thrive in this modern moment.

As to the little canine, my thought is that in the era of 1922 to 1930, the time when this photo had to have been made, there was not much vehicular traffic on the Square. At a quiet time, someone made this great photograph. The dog, I think, may have been an incidental addition. He or she appears to be lying in the dirt--not much gravel I'd wager--with the right front leg extended, as dogs often do.

As to the year range for the photo, I would hazard closer to 1930 than 1922 as the new Bank of Columbia building already shows some signs of dirt and wear along the walls, just above the side walk. Oh well, just my thought, but it is a great photo!

And the little shop to the right, the Maupin building, had an interesting history as explained in several comments, particularly Lee Ann Dohoney Sullivan's. --Mike

February 7, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The column below first appeared in the February 7, 1978 issue of the Adair County News. Topics included a new TV station, a big farm sale, boom times in Porland, and an accidental downtown lake. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

New TV Station in Adair
Sue and Marshall Rowe of Miami Route think that Adair County already has a TV station on the air. Sunday night, just as it was getting dark and colder, Marshall called for Sue to come watch Channel 6. There was no picture, but WAIN was coming in as clear as noon.

Farm sells despite snow
The 300-acre farm of Don Mitchell, located just over the Adair-Green County line in Green County, on the west side of Highway 61, sold Saturday for $140,700 to Mr. B.J. Montgomery of Greensburg. There was a good crowd from several counties, despite the snow. A large number of Adair Countians were there. The farm is one of the prettiest in South Central Kentucky. The sale was handled by Buck Watson, Richard Walker, Opal Watson and Charles Barnes of Watson & Walker Real Estate, Columbia.

There's action at Portland
After the auction Saturday, my partner, Tom Waggener and I drove over to beautiful downtown Portland. There was only one place in the whole city where it was possible for the car to get hung in the snow, and I found it. Fortunately Mayor Garnett Baker came over and helped me out.

West Corner Public Square pondered with little dog photo

By Linda Waggener

This is a thank you for a great conversation about the West Corner of the Public Square in Columbia. Thanks to all who responded to the question posted on December 12, 2019 about an old photo, asking readers if anyone could say what the little animal was in the left front section of the picture.

Responses indicate agreement that it is an animal, a dog, but we're unsure of the circumstances that make it appear nearly legless.

Billy Joe Fudge said: Looks like a dog wading in water from left to right. Must have been a downpour recently. What looks like rough ground to the dog's left and ahead, appears to actually be water running from Greensburg Street down to Burkesville Street on its way to the Western Fork of Town Branch.
