Flags to half-staff Monday in honor of WWII marine

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear has directed flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Monday, December 16, 2019, in honor of a Kentucky Marine killed in action during World War II, but whose remains were only recently identified.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced today that Marine Corps Reserve PFC John R. Bayens, 20, of Louisville, killed during World War II, was accounted for on Sept. 23, 2019.

Ricky Lynn Veach, 63, Russell Springs, KY (1956-2019)

Ricky Lynn Veach of Russell Springs passed away on Frday, December 13, 2019 at the Russell County Hospital. He was 63 years old.

A memorial service for Ricky Lynn Veach will be held at 4pmCT on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the Russell Springs United Methodist Church, 206 Jamestown St, Russell Springs, KY, with Bro. Johnny Dunbar and Bro. Wayne Hart officiating.

Visitation is requested from 1pmCT until 4pmCT on Tuesday.

Sandra Campbell Sullivan, 74, Louisville, KY (1945-2019)

Sandra Rose Campbell Sullivan passed away Thursday, December 12, 2019. She was 74 years old.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, December 20, 2019, at 11amCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY. Burial will follow in Haven Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY, from 4pmET until 8pmET on Monday, December 16, 2019.

Mrs. Sullivan will then be taken to the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia, KY for visitation on Thursday, December 19, 2019, from 4pmCT until 8pmCT.

ACSO: Warrants issued for Dollar Store robbers

On Thursday, December 12, 2019, at 08:14amCT, an unknown white male entered the Dollar General store located at 7775 Campbellsville Road in Adair County, where he produced a handgun and demanded cash. The suspect then fled in a silver Chevrolet Equinox with a female toward Taylor County, where the pair stole two additional vehicles.

The Adair County Sheriff's Office has sworn out warrants this morning, Friday, December 13, 2019, with County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison Corbin for the arrest of Timothy Smith, age 34, and Brittni Smith, age 31, both of Evansville, Indiana, for armed robbery, 1st degree.

Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright has authorized full extradition of Timothy Smith and Brittni Smith, who are married, to be brought back to Adair County to face these charges wherever they are caught.

Chief Deputy Justin Cross and Sheriff Brockman are investigating the incident, and were assisted by the Kentucky State Police and Campbellsville Police Officer Ryan Jewel.

Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis resigns

Kentucky Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis resigned effective immediately on Thursday as Gov. Andy Beshear's newly-appointed Kentucky Board of Education met for the first time. Lewis declined to comment through a spokeswoman, but board chair David Karem said the new board's negotiations with Lewis were amicable.

ACSO: Traffic stop leads to arrest for meth, DUI

At 01:05amCT on Friday, December 13, 2019, Sheriff Deputy Joey Keith initiated a traffic stop on a 2019 silver Jeep 4 miles north of Columbia.

As a result of roadside investigation, Justin Antle, 34, of Russell Springs, was arrested and charged with:
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance Methamphetamine
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Drugs
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
The Adair County Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation.

LWC Men's basketball travels to St. Louis on Saturday

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team travels to St. Louis to play against Missouri Baptist on Saturday, December 14, 2019, at 3pmCT at the Petty Sports and Recreation Complex, Dink Marler Ln, Creve Coeur, MO.

The Blue Raiders (10-3, 1-0 MSC) hit the road after defeating rival Campbellsville 77-63 on Dec. 7 at Biggers Sports Center. Lindsey Wilson shot 40 percent from beyond the arc, in contrast to Campbellsville's 28.6 percent. The Blue Raiders also outrebounded the Tigers 43 to 27.

ACSO: Adair man arrested after search of residence

At 12:41amCT on Friday, December 13, 2019, Sheriff's Deputy Chandler Staten and Trooper Jacob Harper conducted a search of a residence on KY 61 North around the 4000 block, occupied by 39 year old Brandon Blair.

Located and seized in residence were marijuana, baggies, scales, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.

Edmonton holds first Tree-Lighting Ceremony

For the first time ever, the City of Edmonton hosted a Tree-Lighting Ceremony, in conjunction with the Shop Around the Edmonton Square event held on Sunday, December 8, 2019. Live music, games for children and refreshments were provided at City Hall on the Public Square in Edmonton.

The local Chamber of Commerce gave away 350 Metcalfe Dollars in a drawing held for local shoppers.

Tuesday, December 31, 2019, is the last day for anyone wanting to change their political party affiliation and be eligible to vote in that political party's upcoming primary election; pursuant to KRS: 116.055.

You may change your party affiliation by coming into the Adair County Clerk's Office, 424 Public Square, Ste 3, Columbia, KY, during normal business hours, Monday-Friday 8amCT to 4pmCT, and Saturdays 8amCT to NoonCT.

You may also go online at https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/ovrweb/govoteky and register to vote or change your party affiliation.

Due to the New Year's Holiday, our office will be closed on December 31; therefore, December 30, 2019, will be the last day to come into our office and change your party in person. Please remember that you can go online until December 31, 2019.

Public health officials reporting first flu-related deaths

Frankfort, KY - Officials with the Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), are reporting the first four flu-related deaths of the 2019-2020 flu season, with flu activity being raised to "widespread", the highest flu activity level indicating increased flu cases or flu outbreaks in at least half of the Commonwealth's regions.

In addition to the four flu-related deaths, DPH officials are reporting 1,622 laboratory-confirmed flu cases in regions across the state since Aug. 4. Locally, Adair, Green and Russell each have 1 laboratory-confirmed case, according to the December report, while Casey, Cumberland, and Taylor haven't seen any reported cases yet. Metcalfe County had the most in the area, with 8 confirmed cases.

Gov. Beshear restores voting rights to more than 140,000

Frankfort, KY - More than one hundred forty thousand Kentuckians who have paid their debt to society may now be eligible to vote, Gov. Andy Beshear announced today.

On his third day in office, Gov. Beshear was surrounded by voting rights supporters as he signed a civil rights restoration executive order giving many Kentuckians who have completed their sentences for nonviolent offenses a second chance.

Before Gov. Beshear's action, Kentucky was just one of two states in the nation that imposed a lifetime ban on voting for all people with felony convictions.
