Chamber of Commerce sends 'Thank You' for 2019 Parade

By Ellen Zornes

On behalf of the Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce, we wish to thank everyone who had a part in making our 29th annual Christmas Parade such a memorable and exciting event. The floats and other entries were beautiful as always with Santa and Mrs. Claus being a big hit with young and old.

The weather was perfect and all the lights on the floats and other entries made the parade seem simply enchanting. And the Children's Carnival at LWC with its many activities and the Rotary Breakfast were appreciated and well attended.

We appreciate the help of so many people and organizations that it always takes to make the parade a reality.

"While the holiday season is a special time to visit with friends and family, many of these celebrations include alcohol," said KOHS Acting Executive Director Jason Siwula. "Drunken driving-related crashes are 100 percent preventable. All we ask is that drivers make a plan for a sober ride home."

Carol Perkins: Gift-giving traditions

Previous Column: Santa Stories

By Carol Perkins

One year when our grandchildren were small, the gifts under the tree were piled to the lowest branch and then beyond.

I was beyond crazy, but I was not alone and will never be. One of my good friends is a grandmother of two small girls, so for all holidays and other special occasions, she admits going overboard with her gifts. When she racked up fourteen for each this Christmas, she realized (with the reminder from her son) that she needed to back off. She wasn't the only one who bought for the children, so they were often overwhelmed.

As long as children are under the age of ten, we can shower them with "things," and they are happy even with the empty boxes. After the age of ten, we don't waste our money. If they don't pick out what they want or make a list, we might as well stand on the sidewalk and pass out ten-dollar bills.

Beshear appoints all new KY Board of Education

By Jack Brammer and Valarie Honeycutt Spears, Lexington Herald-Leader

Gov. Andy Beshear signed an executive order Tuesday in his first day in office to create a new state school board. He said in the order that the current board has conflicting relationships, a lack of experience in education and did not conduct a nationwide search in 2018 when it hired current commissioner Wayne Lewis.

Beshear named David Karem, a former lawmaker and state board member, as temporary chairman of the new board. Shortly after the announcement, 10 of the old board members said they will file a lawsuit Tuesday against Beshear's actions, challenging his attempt to remove them before their terms expire.

Letter: Cats and weather

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Cats are nearly always photogenic, and this shot of Blue and Momma contemplating the weather is a classic. Both felines appear to be well prepared for winter, plump and sleek-furred.

Our cats who have indoor/outdoor privileges have sulked a bit today--surely if the front door doesn't open onto good weather, the downstairs 'back door' should! --Sharon

Letter: Mistakes can and do happen

Kerry Robertson writes:
Having "nothing to hide" has nothing to do with it. An arrest is not the same thing as a conviction, and people in the United States are innocent until proven guilty.

I might have more sympathy with the views expressed by Hagy and Mashburn if law enforcement never made mistakes, but mistakes do happen, and sometimes innocent people are not just arrested but even convicted upon occasion. --Kerry
